No surprises: Melbourne instrumentalists Surprise Chef release the superb new LP Superb, a looser, funkier follow-up to the heavy-lifting they did on their earlier outing, a live rescore of the 1971 cult film Wake In Fright. Formed in 2017 as a tape-only jam unit, the group built their name on a run of tightly wound 45s, before 2019's All News Is Good News announced a broader cinematic ambition. Superb finds them easing up a little, tapping into the kind of spontaneous thrill that first got them hooked on soul, funk and vintage soundtrack music. 'Bully Ball' lands with rattling intensity, while 'Body Slam' and 'Fare Evader' pivot from elegance to madness via wailing synths and mutant low-end. A blaring cinematic soul flamethrower aimed at pre-cindered ears.
