Cuba: Music and Revolution Vol.2 Compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart BakerSoul Jazz Records

Cuba: Music and Revolution: Culture Clash in Havana: Experiments in Latin Music 1975-85 Vol. 2 is the new album compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) that takes off in exactly the same vein as the much-acclaimed Vol. 1 - exploring the many styles that came out of Cuba in the 1970s as Latin and Salsa mixed with heavy doses of Jazz, Funk, and Disco to create some of the most dancefloor-friendly music every made!

The album comes as a heavyweight 3xLP and deluxe 2xCD set, complete with extensive sleeve notes, and is jam-packed with heavy bass lines, synth and Wah-Wah guitar funk combined with the heavyweight percussion, powerful brass lines and the all-encompassing Latin rhythms of Cuban music known throughout the world.

Much of the music on this album is featured in the deluxe large format book ‘Cuba: Music and Revolution: Original Cover Art of Cuban Music: Record Sleeve Designs of Revolutionary Cuba 1959-90’, released by Soul Jazz Books and also compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records), featuring the music and record designs of Cuba, made in the 30-year period following the Cuban Revolution.

The music on this new album features a host of rarities from legendary Cuban artists such as Los Van Van, alongside Grupo De Experimentación, Farah Maria, Ricardo Eddy Martinez, Juan Pablo Torres, Grupo Sintesis and Orquesta Riverside, most of whose names remain largely unknown outside of Cuba but have long been favourite club tracks and secret-weapons in Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's record boxes!

The music on this album reflects the most cutting-edge of Cuban groups that were recording in Cuba in the 1970s and 1980s – all searching for a new Cuban identity and new musical forms reflecting both the Afro-Cuban cultural heritage of a nation that gave birth to Latin music - and its new position as a socialist state. Most of the music featured on this album have never been heard outside of Cuba.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Both Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker have been involved in Cuban music for more than two decades – Gilles Peterson with his many Havana Cultura projects for his Brownswood label and Stuart Baker with a number of Soul Jazz Records albums recorded in Cuba. This Soul Jazz Records album is released in conjunction with Egrem, the Cuban state record company, and has been put together after the many crate-digging trips that both compilers have made on the streets of Havana and beyond in Cuba stretching over a 20-year period, searching out rare and elusive original Cuban vinyl records.

    -------------------------------------------------------

REVIEWS of CUBA: Music and Revolution vol. 1:

"We already have a strong contender for 'compilation of the year'. Put together by devout crate-diggers and Cuban music enthusiasts Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records)" JUNO

"It's abundantly clear that these compilers are at the very top of their game. Everything here was previously unheard outside of Cuba, making this a feast for the curious" Vinyl District

Jr. Thomas & The VolcanosBewareColemine Records

Colemine Records reissue the classic 2015 soulful reggae album from Jr. Thomas & The Volcanos!.. Didn't make it to Broadwick St. first time around but we recommend it.

Junior Thomas aka Thomas McDowall is a songwriter, musician, vocalist and producer born north of Minneapolis, MN. He developed a sincere devotion to classic Jamaican music at a young age, listening to such artists as Dave Barker, The Bleechers, The Wailers, Phyllis Dillon and Alton Ellis.“I wanted to make a record that was honest and true to the golden era of Jamaican music” says Thomas. After several conversations with reggae producer Brian Dixon, they both realized they were on the same page. Thomas showed up to Dixon’s Volcano Lounge studio in Los Angeles a few weeks later ready to record. With Thomas and Dixon as the brainchildren and nucleus of the project, they began assembling the musicians now known as The Volcanos.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Includes seminal German groups: Can, Faust, Neu, Amon Duul II as well as a host of lesser known groups and artists such as Agitation Free, Broselmachine, Niagara and many more! And as well as the original pioneers, Deutsche Electronische Musik 2 also features many of the second wave of German electronic artists and groups from the late 70s and early 80s (DAF, Asmus Tietchens, Rolf Trostel) who successfully connected new wave, minimal synth and a European post-punk avant-gardism with the earlier more established Krautrock pioneers who began at the start of the 70s.

The first seeds of German rock and experimental electronic music were planted in 1968, as students and workers in Paris, Prague, Mexico and throughout the world demonstrated against mainstream society, the war in Vietnam, imperialism and bourgeois values. The birth of a counter-culture, drug experimentation and social change expanded musical worlds. Germany experienced its own cultural revolution fuelled by these worldwide student and worker revolts and by a generation’s desire to rid itself of the guilt of war.

Many German youth turning their back on mainstream society. From the opening of the first collective/cooperative in 1967, Commune 1, in Berlin, to the formation of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist group and the bombings, kidnappings and killings of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (RAF), young Germans sought out new values and a lifestyle outside of ‘the system’. These cooperative and communal experiences led to a number of new radical German bands including Amon Duul, Faust and Can.

Many artists and musicians believed a complete rejection of everything musically that had gone before was also necessary in order to build a new identity for German culture. At this time German music meant ‘schlager’ music – insipid pop music that hardly confronted the country’s recent historical events.

Holger Czukay and Irmin Scmidt of Can studied music under the radical avant-garde composer Karheinz Stockhausen and Conrad Schnitzler studied art under the conceptual artist Joseph Beuys. German rock groups were as interested in musique concrète and serial compostion as they were in the psychedelia of Pink Floyd or the rock, soul and jazz music played by resident American forces.

From this beginning German rock music began an evolutionary journey of experimentation. Electronic music became a pathway to notions of space and the cosmos. Conversely, the emergence of communal living led to a number of musicians setting up live/work spaces in rural areas and developing a ‘pastoral’ outlook, with musical ideas engaged closely with nature.

German electronic music, kosmische music, cosmic rock, space music. The objectives were to create new music, ‘free’ from the past. A music that gave seed out of the cultural ‘nothingness’ that young Germans felt as a consequence of Germany’s role in the Second World War. A generation who grew up stifled by the recent history of Nazi atrocities, the guilt of their parents’ generation and their disillusionment at the reintegration of old Nazis into mainstream society.

Jackie MittooThe Keyboard King At Studio OneUniversal Sound

SUPER NEW 20th anniversary special one-off pressing BLUE coloured vinyl gatefold sleeve edition of Soul Jazz Records’ seminal Jackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King at Studio One

            ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jackie Mittoo is one of the defining figureheads of reggae music !

From forming The Skatalites, at age 15, alongside Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook and others, to his work as writer, arranger, producer at Studio One records during the sixties, writing and playing for artists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and The Heptones (to name a few), to his career as a solo artist as well as leader of bands such as The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and The Sound Dimension, Jackie Mittoo is at the heart of reggae music. He was one of the instigators of Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. In the seventies, DJ music and Dancehall were based upon classic rhythms of the sixties, many using the instrumental tracks that Jackie Mittoo created at Studio One at this time.

This compilation features the work of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One. It features music recorded as a solo artist (as opposed to the numerous singers that he accompanied). Most of these are taken from his recordings in the mid-sixties where he was recording on an almost daily basis at Studio One's Brentford Road studios developing the funky reggae sound that was his trademark.

Jackie Mittoo is as much an icon of Reggae as he is to fans of Funk music. He is without doubt the funkiest keyboard player ever to come out of Jamaica!

**Deep, spiritual material from 1982 by Alice Coltrane!!!! INCREDIBLE LOST ALBUM!!

'Kirtan: Turiya Sings' features Alice Coltrane at peak spirituality and is presented in this arrangement for the first time in any format. Turyia Sings was originally released in 1982 on cassette as a collection of devotional songs including vocals, organ, strings, and synthesizers available only at Alice’s Sai Anantam Ashram. Kirtan: Turiya Sings features a sparser arrangement of organ and chanting, produced by Ravi Coltrane.

This is intentional, devotional music created with the purpose of connecting to a higher power. The pared back arrangements on this new release are enchantingly haunting and encourage the listener to reach a "meditative headspace so as to channel connectiveness to a greater spirit."

Revival Season is an exciting new collaboration project featuring Columbus, GA rapper Brandon ‘BEZ’ Evans and Jonah Swilley from Mattiel’s band. The debut single ‘Iron Warrior’ perfectly captures the classic old school style of early 90’s Hip Hop with echoes of the Beastie Boys, Digable Planets and The Pharcyde, with a laid back feel good sound for the summertime.

The track was recorded and produced by Atlanta based musician Jonah Swilley who has worked with Curtis Harding, Night Beats and is a founding member of Mattiel’s band. He also makes music for his own production label, Sugar Records.

            Don RendellSpace WalkDecca

A figure in British modern jazz for over half a century, Don Rendell was both active protagonist and key witness to the main developments in the music from its rise out of tiny clubs and back rooms on up to the most prestigious national stages. From his earliest performances in London’s West End and his work of the 50s and 60s — most not ably with the Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet — to the lower profile work of the 70s and 80s, his quite assurance and consistent performance marked him out as a highly respected figure among his peers. He is one of a handful of British artists to feature on Blue Note Records and appeared on some of the most distinctive and characterful British jazz albums by the likes of Michael Garrick, Stan Tracey, Amancio D’Silva, and Neil Ardley. Even though Rendell eschewed much of the free and electric fusion styles that came to the fore in the late 60s, in the main sticking to an acoustic sound with melody and rhythm at its heart, he similarly bridled at any notion that he was merely a ‘bopper’, a description he positively hated. In many ways, Space Walk was as much a valedictory as transitionary album for Rendell. It was his last for Denis Preston, the fabled producer behind Lansdowne Studios, described by Neil Ardley as a ‘rare Diaghilev like figure’ who steered many of the key figures of the British jazz scene into the studio when nobody else would record them.

These first artists created new electronic musical landscapes as well as pursuing a stubborn D-I-Y aesthetic, often releasing material on cassette and pioneering use of lo-fi technology, primitive drum machines and home-recording techniques. Gilles Peterson BOOK! First Edition, Limited HardbackLOCKDOWN FM: BROADCASTING IN A PANDEMIC

            SORRY SOLD OUT!

LIMITED COPIES 1st EDITION DELUXE HARDBACK!! ORDER NOW!!!

Lockdown FM: Broadcasting In a Pandemic is a 600+ page cultural documentation of a year in lockdown. Densely populated and rich in imagery, it records the response of London based DJ and Broadcaster, Gilles Peterson and the community network of global music and culture platform, Worldwide FM to the impact of Covid-19 and that moment in time when the world went into lockdown to slow down the deadly impact of the virus.

This radical book project was conceived as the nation emerged from the very first lockdown. It is built around the playlists from eighty Worldwide FM and BBC6 Music radio broadcasts Peterson made, following Boris Johnson’s lockdown announcement on 23 March 2020. As the pandemic closed in, Gilles Peterson retreated to the Brownswood basement and his family “bubble”. He embraced his passion for running. For the first time in a long career of DJ-ing globally, life as he knew it came to a halt so this personal, and often intimate recollection, picks out key cultural moments during what was an incredibly unique time.

Lockdown FM actually kicks off pre-lockdown on New Year’s Eve and provides an insight into Petersons’ packed schedule which included a tour of New York, Chicago, Australia, New Zealand and London before his diary was wiped clean. As the timeline unfolds it’s impossible to ignore the deadly impact of the pandem- ic. The music world lost a host of great musicians and artists, who were well known and much-loved including McCoy Tyner, Manu Dibango, Tony Allen, Ty, Mike Huckaby... and this book pays respect to their lives and creative output. Offset against the fatalities, Peterson celebrates the birthdays of musicians close to him such as Stevie Wonder and Dee Dee Bridgewater. He also explores different genres via ‘The 20’ series which included Jazz Dance (Combat), Trip Hop, Jazz Funk, Modal Jazz.

The playlists provided the framework to bring in other creatives impacted by the pandemic and contributions to the book are made by Zara McFarlane, Jean- Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick, Simon Emmerson, Rob Gallagher, Emily Moxon, Louie Vega, François Kervorkian, Brian Bacchus, Adrian Younge, Kassa Overall, Jazz Re:- freshed, Damu The Fudgemunk and Raw Poetic. To counter life in the basement he enlisted the photography of Dobie who cycled daily through an abandoned city.

As the summer sun shone, the impact of the death of George Floyd spread worldwide. The lockdown crumbled under the weight of the Black Lives Matter Movement and the book engages with its impact through contributions by Erica McKoy, Thristian (Global Roots) and Paul Martin.

Edited by Straight No Chaser’s Paul Bradshaw with design /art direction by Hugh Miller, Gilles Peterson’s ‘Lockdown FM’ concept came to life through
a period of intense improvisation. The result is extraordinary. It follows a timeline we all lived through and cements the vital role that music, and those who create it, played – and continues to play– in helping us all get through an unprecedented time.

Fire Over Babylon: Dread, Peace and Conscious Sounds at Studio OneSoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records’ new Studio One collection ‘Fire Over Babylon: Dread, Peace and Conscious Sounds at Studio One’ features a stellar selection of 70s roots music – classic and rare tracks recorded at Clement Dodd’s musical empire at 13 Brentford Road in the 1970s.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rastafarian-inspired Roots music was an ever-important aspect of Studio One’s output from the start of the 1970s onwards and this album features many of the ground-breaking groups and artists that established the sound of Jamaica during this decade and beyond.

Featured here are seminal artists such as Freddie McGregor, The Wailing Souls, The Gladiators, Horace Andy, Devon Russell, Cedric Brooks, Count Ossie, Judah Eskender Tafari alongside a host of lesser-known rare cuts made at Studio One from artists such as The Prospectors, Viceroys and Pablove Black.

Studio One and founder Clement Dodd’s connection with Rastafarianism dates back to the early 1960s, with Dodd accompanying members of the Skatalites up to the hills of Kingston to listen to the music of the Rastafarianism Count Ossie and his drummers. The album sleevenotes discuss how Clement Dodd’s musical links, as well as his role in heading the most important record label in Reggae, are in many ways linked to the beliefs of Rastafarianism.

This album is released as a heavyweight black vinyl double-album with gatefold sleeve, full notes and download code, deluxe CD with full booklet and slipcase and digital album.

Cult 'rainbow rock' duo Growing contributed one of the most incredible albums of the new millennium, 2008's mind-bogglingly overlooked 'All The Way' on maverick label, The Social Registry. Now they're back with their all new 'amplified ambient' sound that's equally beguiling. Ancestral minimalism/heavenly music experiment over two epic, 20 minute compositions, channeling a strong Popol Vuh/Laurie Spiegal/Iasos vibe with lush, Jordan Belson inspired sleeve art that only adds to the charm of this must have release!

              Tony CrockettQueen Of HeartsDiggers Dozen

A UK boogie lost gem from 1982 / Brit Funk era, recorded by singer Tony Crockett and Ralph Lewars' band "Pastiche". All in their early to mid 20's and born in London of Caribbean descent. The group were short lived, working on material for just a few years with the "Queen of Hearts" 12-inch being their only release. The track immediately demands the listener's attention with it's jazz piano, thumping drums, heavy bass, guitar licks and laced with funky flute, synth stabs, spacey sound effects, then dropping into soulful silky vocals and slinky rap - bringing together this killer boogie groove. Now finely re-issued for the first time by Diggers Dozen, giving this incredible rare record a more deserved chance to be heard and loved!

Two Synths, A Guitar (And) A Drum Machine - Soul Jazz Records #1 Post Punk DanceSoul Jazz Records

              OUT NOW!

Soul Jazz Records new ‘Two Synths, A Guitar (and) A Drum Machine’ is a new collection of current D-I-Y post-punk bands shaped by the mutant sounds of no wave, punk funk and New York Noise bands from the late 70s and early 80s that collided with the world of underground dance music found at the Paradise Garage, Mudd Club in New York City (ESG, Arthur Russell, Bush Tetras, Talking Heads, Suicide, Liquid Liquid).

Other influences cited here include Manchester and Sheffield’s industrial post-punk sounds of the 1980s (Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Gang of Four) as well as the 1970s German electronic experimentalism of Cluster, Neu!, Harmonia and Can.

Featured artists from around the globe include Los Angeles D-I-Y band Automatic, New Fries from Toronto, artist/music collaborators Toresch from Germany, Susumu Makai from Japan/UK, Vex Ruffin from the Phillipines/California and Madmadmad, Gramme, Tom of England and other UK groups

That all the bands featured here manage to make distinctive contemporary music out of these 80s roots is testament to the wide range of other musics that are seamlessly absorbed into a modern melting pot of sound – hip-hop, the electronic European avant-garde, rave culture, and more.

Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980-1989Light In The Attic

Light In The Attic release 'Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980–1988', a collection of tracks that were created “during Japan’s soaring bubble economy of the 1980s, an era in which aesthetic visions and consumerism merged. The music echoed the nation’s prosperity and with financial abundance, came the luxury to dream.”

“Thanks to the idyllic economic climate and innovations in domestically manufactured music gear, creators on the edges were empowered to focus on satisfying their artistic visions in the open headspace of home studios.”

“These tracks exist in a space of transition when the major label grip on the Japanese recording market began to give way to the escalation of independents

Across its 14-tracks, 'Somewhere Between' spans ambient, pop, electronic, minimal, and so-called “shadow sounds”, with music from Mkwaju Ensemble, Naoki Asai, Noriko Miyamoto, and more.

              The InspirationsReggae Fever (Expanded)Doctor Bird

Originally released in Jamaica and the UK in 1970, ‘Reggae Fever’ primarily served as a showcase for the talents of singing duo, The Inspirations (Trevor Shaw AKA Jimmy London and Billy Dyce) and the album’s producer, Joel Gibson AKA Joe Gibbs.

Although the album only sold modestly at the time of its issue, it has since become one of the most collectable long-players from the boss reggae era.

Now expanded to include almost the entirety of Joe Gibbs’s recorded output from 1969, the collection features an array of best-sellers alongside rarities performed by some of Jamaica’s finest musical talents of the period.

And with five tracks new to CD, this is another must-have compilation for fans of vintage reggae sounds.

Bob AndyLots Of Love And IDoctor Bird

Having become firmly established as one of Jamaica’s premier singer-songwriters in the ‘60s and early ’70s, Bob Andy cemented his place in the pantheon of musical greats with his seminal album, ‘Lot Of Love And I’.

Originally released in 1977 on Sonia Pottinger’s High Note label, the LP has since become widely acclaimed as one of the most musically accomplished collections of the roots era, as Andy, backed by some of Kingston’s finest musicians, demonstrates the range of his talents with ten sublime original compositions, including the popular title track, ‘Revelation’, ‘Unchain Me’ and the celebrated ‘Ghetto Stays In The Mind’.

Now, 44 years after its original release, ‘Lots Of Love And I’ is finally issued on CD, with its track-listing augmented by four bonus cuts, two of which have remained unreleased until now. If you only ever buy one roots reggae release in your life, this should be it.

Lloyd & GlenThat Girl / You Got Me GoingHarlem Shuffle

This essential DOUBLE sider was first released in 1967 on Crystal Records, the Jamaican record label owned by the famed producer Derrick Harriott. Derrick produced both of these great songs.

The single was also released on the 'BLUE' Coxsone label in the U.K. the same year. This single has never been repressed since. It is impossible to find in listenable condition and is very much in demand.

The A side That Girl is an instant Reggay scorcher with a cracking rhythm and fun lyrics. As ever with Lloyd and Glen, it showcases outstanding vocals from the duo along with a spotless production from Derrick Harriott. On the B side, a gorgeous love song from Lloyd and Glen. Poignant vocals from the duo are perfectly complemented by a big horns section. It is in fact as good as the A side.

              Lone ArkShowcaseFruits Records

Probably the most respected and sought-after producer of the European reggae scene of the last ten years, Spanish genius Roberto Sánchez (Willi Williams, Earl Zero, Alpheus, Keith & Tex, Milton Henry,...) takes place behind the microphone to deliver a new album as a singer under his pseudonym LONE ARK. Soberly titled Showcase Vol. 1, this album is a collaboration between Sánchez and Swiss band THE 18TH PARALLEL, whose playing is well known to reggae fans, since its musicians have recently played and produced some remarkable records, including I've Seen by Oku Onuora, Roots I Vision by Micah Shemaiah or Wonderland of Green by The Silvertones and Burro Banton. Faithful to the Jamaican roots reggae tradition, Showcase Vol. 1 offers six vocal tracks followed by their dub counterparts where all the creativity of the sound engineer and the musicians is freely expressed. On instrumentals at the same time heavy and irresistibly dancing, with a modern production but deeply rooted in the roots reggae sound, Lone Ark and The 18th Parallel push their listeners to critical reflection. A strong message + powerful music = a must-have album!

He recorded with Johnny Nash (most notably playing guitar on Nash’s Tears on My Pillow) and with X-Ray Spex’s Poly Styrene. He's had his songs covered by Joan Baez, Georgie Fame and Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira! This double A sided 7” is taken from his 1975 album Reggae Blue album which he recorded for Charisma Records. The vital ‘People (Who Kill People) is sadly just as apt today as it was in 1975, while ‘I Wouldn’t Mind’ is simply a beautiful song.

              Cornell CampbellTime For PeaceJancro

Legendary Reggae vocalist Cornell Campbell is to release a new E.P entitled ‘Time For Peace’, to mark the 52nd Anniversary of Martin Luthur King Jr’s assassination, 4th April 2021. Taking its title from Cornell’s lyrical addition to Black Man In A White World, “I want you to understand, I need, I need everyone to hang on, in love, peace and unity”, the new 12” EP features bold interpretations of two of soul music's most iconic songs about race, identity and injustice. Both Michael Kiwanuka’s ‘Black Man In A White World’ and ‘Outernational Blues’ - a take on the Marvin Gaye classic ‘Inner City Blues’ - evoke the sentiment and spirit of MLK’s peaceful protest, and act as a reminder as to the importance of grace, pride and dignity in difficult times. Capturing a unique combination of vocal vulnerability and wisdom, this is music that demands deep listening. Cornell Campbell’s voice at 75, carries a new found poignancy and depth of emotion; one which feels perfectly suited to delivering an elders perspective on such emotionally loaded topics. The E.P was recorded and produced over four countries, with the music for all tracks having been recorded in London, England at The Total Refreshment Centre, before being voiced in Kingston Jamaica at Anchor Studios.

Roy Mehta's exquisite black and white photographs capture the daily rituals of its various communities, most notably the Black and Irish, engaged in seemingly simple activities at home, in the street and at church. From Jazz Funk & Fusion To Acid JazzThe History Of The UK Jazz Dance Scene By SnowboyAuthorHouse

This is the first time the history of the uniquely British 'Jazz Dance' scene has been documented in such depth, written over a period of 10 years by Mark Cotgrove, aka Snowboy, the noted bandleader, DJ, club promoter, journalist and Afro-Cuban percussionist. This amazing 300 page book contains over 200 interviews and documents the scene's fast-flying footsteps through its inception in the Jazz Funk movement of the 70's, through the underground Black British dance scene of the early 80's, on to the massive Acid Jazz phenomenon and beyond! This is a labour of love by Snowboy dedicated to the dancers, the DJs and the clubs all over the UK - like The Goldmine, Electric Ballroom, Berlin and The Wag - where Jazz Dance flourished and staked it's own place in the history of British Black Music club culture.

Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream. And Stevie Wonder had a dream. This is a book about dreams.' In the autumn of 1980, Stevie Wonder invited Gil Scott-Heron to join him on a forty-one-city tour across America, ending in Washington in January 1981, to gather popular support for the creation of a holiday in honour of the great civil-rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. Scott-Heron uses this history-making tour as the backbone of his fascinating memoir. Raised by his grandmother in Jackson, Tennessee, Scott-Heron's journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most uncompromising and influential musicians and songwriters of his generation is a remarkable one. Politically savvy and savagely satirical, socially conscious and tender-hearted, Gil Scott-Heron has been called the godfather of rap, and his unexpected death in May 2011 marked the loss of one of the world's most vocal and articulate artists. Chuck D of Public Enemy said of Scott-Heron, 'we do what we do and who we do because of you' and Eminem added, 'Scott-Heron influenced all of hip-hop'. In the words of Sarah Silverman, 'he mirrored ugliness with beauty, audacity, and valour'. A compelling testament to Gil Scott-Heron's career and achievements, The Last Holiday is full of Scott-Heron's keen insights into the music industry, the civil rights movement, modern America, governmental hypocrisy and our wider place in the world.

"Hold On to Your Dreams" is the first biography of the musician and composer Arthur Russell, one of the most important but least known contributors to the downtown New York music scene during the 1970s and 1980s. With the exception of a few dance recordings, including "Is It All Over My Face?" and "Go Bang! number 5," Russell's pioneering music was largely forgotten until the issue of two albums in 2004 triggered a revival of interest, which gained momentum with the release of additional albums and the documentary film Wild Combination. Based on interviews with more than seventy of his collaborators, family members, and friends, "Hold On to Your Dreams" provides vital new information about this singular, eccentric musician and his role in the boundary-breaking downtown music scene.

Tim Lawrence traces Russell's odyssey from his hometown of Oskaloosa, Iowa, to countercultural San Francisco, and eventually to New York, where he lived from 1973 until his death from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Refusing definition while dreaming of commercial success, Russell wrote and performed new wave and disco as well as quirky rock, twisted folk, voice-cello dub, and hip-hop inflected pop. 'He was way ahead of other people in understanding that the walls between concert music and popular music and avant-garde music were illusory', comments the composer Philip Glass.

'He lived in a world in which those walls weren't there'. Lawrence follows Russell across musical genres and through such vital downtown music spaces as the Kitchen, the Loft, the Gallery, the Paradise Garage, and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Along the way, he captures Russell's openness to sound, his commitment to collaboration, and his uncompromising idealism.

                            Art MastersBasquiatSelf Made Hero

The dazzling, provocative work of Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) would come to define the vibrant New York art scene of the late ’70s and early ’80s. Punk, jazz, graffiti, hip-hop: his work drew heavily on the cultural trappings of lower Manhattan, to which he fled—from Brooklyn—at the age of 15. This stunning graphic novel captures the dramatic life and exhilarating times of this archetypal New York artist, covering everything from the SAMO graffiti project to his first solo show, from his relationship with Andy Warhol to the substance abuse that would cost him his life. Today, Basquiat’s influence can be seen not only in fine art but in fashion, design, and music. Now, for the first time, his remarkable story is told in graphic novel form. This playful, authoritative biography shows Basquiat’s work to be more important, his themes more urgent, than ever before.

Future DaysKrautrock and the Building of Modern Germany Faber & Faber

West Germany, following the Second World War, was a country in shock: estranged from its recent history, and adrift from the rest of Europe. But this disorientating landscape proved fertile ground for a generation of musicians who, from the 1960s onwards, would develop the experimental and various sounds that became known as Krautrock. Eschewing the Anglo-American jazz/blues tradition, they took their inspiration from elsewhere: the mysticism of the East; the fractured classicism of Stockhausen; the pneumatic repetition of industry and the dense forests of the Rhineland; the endless winding of Autobahns.

Faust, Neu!, Cluster, Ash Ra Tempel, Amon Düül II, Can and Kraftwerk. These may not all be household names, but the influence of their ruminative, expansive compositions upon Western popular music is incalculable. These groups were key to the development of postpunk, electronica and ambient music. Without them Bowie would not have made his Berlin trilogy, Talking Heads would have been a straight-ahead rock band, and the Pet Shop Boys would have a completely different stage act.

Future Days is an in-depth study of this meditative, sometimes abstract, often very beautiful music and the groups that made it, throwing light on the social and political context that informed them. It's an indispensable book for those wanting to understand how much of today's music came about, and to discover a wealth of highly influential and pioneering musicians.

The Dead YardA Story Of Modern JamaicaFaber and Faber

Jamaica used to be the source of much of Britain's wealth, a tropical paradise for the planters, a Babylonian exile for the Africans shipped to the Caribbean. It became independent in 1962 but Jamaica is now a country in despair. It has become a cockpit of gang warfare, drug crime and poverty. Haunted by the legacy of imperialism, its social and racial divisions seem entrenched. Its extraordinary musical tradition and physical beauty are shadowed by casual murder, police brutality and political corruption.

Ian Thomson shows a side of Jamaica that tourists rarely see. He met ordinary Jamaicans in their homes and workplaces; and his encounters with the white elite, who still own most of Jamaica's businesses and newspapers, are unforgettable. Thomson brings alive the country's unique racial and ethnic mix; the all-pervading influence of the USA; and, the increasing disillusionment felt by its people, who can't rely on the state for their most basic security. At the heart of the book is Jamaica's tense, uneasy relationship with Britain, to whom it remains politically and culturally bound.

The Autobiography Of Malcolm X (1965)Written with Alex HaleyPenguin Books

From hustling, drug addiction and armed violence in America's black ghettos Malcolm X turned, in a dramatic prison conversion, to the puritanical fervour of the Black Muslims. As their spokesman he became identified in the white press as a terrifying teacher of race hatred; but to his direct audience, the oppressed African-American, he brought hope and self-respect. This autobiography (written with Alex Haley) reveals his quick-witted integrity, usually obscured by batteries of frenzied headlines, and the fierce idealism which led him to reject both liberal hypocrisies and black racialism.

Directions In Music 1969-1973: Miles Davis His Musicians and the Birth of a New Age of JazzAce Records

In 1970 Miles Davis released “Bitches Brew”, which crystalised the trumpeter and bandleader’sexperiments in rhythm, electronics and musical structure which he had been building on over the previous three years. The album has since become one of the most influential in musical history and was joined over the next couple of years by “Jack Johnson and “On The Corner” in defining the future of music.

Miles was the master bandleader and his LPs at the time declared that these were his ‘Directions In Music’, but he forged them with the help of a hand-picked group of musicians who proved themselves good enough to share his space on stage and in the studio. These players would all become central to jazz’s continued relevance and many would go on the record best-selling jazz records of their own. This compilation looks at the records that they made around the time they played with Miles and how they fed into or were fed by their time in his group.

So we have Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul with versions of tracks they cut with Miles. Herbie Hancock’s journey into the electronic instruments that Miles convinced him to play, and Keith Jarrett’s firm rejection of them. Lonnie Liston Smith borrows the Indian percussion from “On The Corner” for his take on electronic funk. Chick Corea, John McLaughlin and Gary Bartz all show their distinctive talents that were allowed to shine in Miles’ band. As a bonus, we have Miles’ musicians alongside Betty Davis (his wife at the time) on a take of Cream’s ‘Politician Man’ and Miles’ 1970 group live at The Cellar Door on Joe Zawinul’s ‘Directions’.

Stage Two from 1976 comes swinging right out the gate with a set of nine monster tunes, heavy drum-breaks, reggae infused afro-beats, funky bass lines, Wah-wah-psyche guitars and lyrics that straddle between a sense of melancholy and frantic urgency. This is a quintessential Pat Thomas (backed by the Marijata band) record that every serious collector or fan needs to have in his collection.

Somewhere amid the sea of pimps and tough guys, Blaculas and Blackensteins that came to characterize the films of the Blaxploitation era was a curious little oddity that defied classification. Not scary enough to be horror, too supernatural to be drama, with far too many animal sacrifices to be a romance, Lord Shango represented a solemn, contemplative, spiritual alternative to the sort of “exploitative” sex and violence-laden criminal storylines that gave Blaxploitation its name.

Early-eighties Island boomshot from the Exile One founder, setting his soulful vocals to a stepping groove with finger-popping boogie-bass.

Salegy is the electrified updating of the traditional Antsa style from the north-west of the island — 6/8 rhythms, layered with percussion and call-and-response vocals — and the Vetson’ Androy group one of its most popular proponents. From 1978, Mavandeza has the heady urgency of killer Fela — with two women singers out front, psychedelic organ and prowling bass. The flip is from a decade later, by Malagasy superstar Eusebe Jaojaby — rough and tough dancefloor worries, with a mazy string-line, mash-it-down percussion and lilting flute. Another sizzler from Sofrito!

Backatcha Records presents 'Swave Villi Us', a collection of sixteen sought after independent soul cuts, recorded between 1971-1984 from across the US and beyond.

The album comes as a 2xLP, complete with extensive sleeve notes, featuring top-shelf rarities end-to-end. Whilst soul 45 aficionados will be familiar with the titles, obtaining them has always been a problem until now.

From 70s Californian psych-folk, to downtempo ballads from the Southern states, to mid-tempo gems and sweet soul from the Midwest, to 80s Sunshine State talent show entries and Bahamian dreamy percussion-led guitar jams, the selection showcases essential top-shelf regional sounds spanning the broader soul spectrum across nearly two decades. Also featured are two previously unreleased versions of Nature’s Choice ‘Never Get A Chance’ and Watch Tower’s ‘Forever, Together’ led by Ohio talent Maurice Moore, from original session tapes and exclusive to this compilation.

Hugely talented Afro-Cuban composer and trumpeter, Yelfris Valdés (Yussef Kamaal, Daymé Arocena, 2000black family), delivers an incredible new album for the debut release on Tim Garcia's Musica Macondo Records. 'For The Ones...' cooks up a hypnotic blend of jazz, cuban rhythms and electronics, paving the way for a new Cuban sound of the future. Fans of the experimental Miles Davis sound should give this a spin. Highly recommended!

This 1977 studio recording finds Herbie Hancock embracing his jazz roots. The straightforward trio setting puts Hancock’s piano front and center. Backed by Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams behind the drums, the recording features Hancock originals as well as the Trio’s take on Miles Davis’ 'Milestones'.

Though recorded at fabled San Francisco studio The Automatt, the recording was only immediately issued in Japan. To this day Japan is the only country to see a vinyl release of this session - until now!

A slow, sleazy, grinding minimal-wave classic that sounds just a good in the club today as it probably did back then in 1980. Essential.

Edo Funk Explosion Vol. 1Analog Africa

It was in Benin City, in the heart of Nigeria, that a new hybrid of intoxicating highlife music known as 'Edo Funk' was born. It first emerged in the late 1970s when a group of musicians began to experiment with different ways of integrating elements from their native Edo culture and fusing them with new sound effects coming from West Africa´s night-clubs. Unlike the rather polished 1980's Nigerian disco productions coming out of the international metropolis of Lagos, Edo Funk was raw and reduced to its bare minimum.

Analog Africa focus on this style with an essential, 12 track compilation with extended notes and photos.

The Awakening are the heaviest of all the groups to release on Black Jazz Records - this is simply a spiritual jazz classic album - every track is superb. This is also one of the RAREST of all Black Jazz albums - never reissued and super deep - 100% ESSENTIAL PURCHASE!

A spiritual jazz classic from The Awakening that sees the group making sidesteps into the freer jazz zones - quite natural for band pianist Ken Chaney and saxophonist-flautist Ari Brown, given their involvement with the Afro-centric AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Music) - essential!
