Kamasi Washington's new soundtrack doesn't waste a second, thanks to its theming after the anime Lazarus: whose core premise is that every ingester of a hot, market-busting analgesic drug is soon to die. Known for stretching jazz into widescreen cosmic realms on The Epic and Heaven And Earth, the LA saxophonist here tightens the focus, writing 11 pieces that surge with the same propulsion as dread as is explored in the anime's core, nerve-racking strapline: "there are only 30 days until humanity is doomed". His brass swells, urgent percussion and spiralling harmonies become the pulse of Axel's mission to stop Hapna's fallout, a score as combustible as the story it drives. Rather than float in abstraction, Washington leans into direct, high-stakes momentum, fusing funk, spiritual jazz and orchestral oraculations into a momentous but somehow unmessy maelstrom.
