                KaleidoscopeSoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records’ new album ‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ brings together many of the ground-breaking artists involved in the new jazz scene that has developed in the UK over the last few years. Featured artists include Matthew Halsall, Yazmin Lacey, Ill Considered, Tenderlonious, Theon Cross, Emma-Jean Thackray and many, many more in this ground-breaking release.

As well as sharing a pioneering spirit in these new artists’ approach to frontier-crossing musical boundaries, a further theme of this album is that many also share a determination to independent practices - and most of these artists’ recordings featured here are either self-published or released on independent labels. While the attention of this new wave of jazz artists has up until now has been London-based, this album shows how this movement is spread across the whole of Britain (and indeed beyond).

‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ shows that while there is commonality in these artists approach to music, there is a wide variety of styles – from deep spiritual jazz, electronic experimentalisation, punk-edged funk, uplifting modal righteousness, deep soulful vocals and much more.

Soul Jazz Records’ new release comes as a superb one-off pressing special deluxe triple album edition which comes with a bonus limited-edition one-off pressing 7" single, a standard triple album, and a deluxe double CD pack. "Khruangbin has always been multilingual, weaving far-flung musical languages like East Asian surf-rock, Persian funk, and Jamaican dub into mellifluous harmony. But on its third album, it’s finally speaking out loud. Mordechai features vocals prominently on nearly every song, a first for the mostly instrumental band. It’s a shift that rewards the risk, reorienting Khruangbin’s transportive sound toward a new sense of emotional directness, without losing the spirit of nomadic wandering that’s always defined it."

Step Forward Youth: Roots Masters From The "Punky Reggae Party"Greensleeves

A fantastic selection of tracks from a time when reggae and punk were really crossing over on the UK scene – the earliest years of the punk rock movement, when bands like The Clash, Slits, and others were bringing the sounds of Jamaica into much greater mainstream circulation! The cuts here aren't reggae punk – or punked-up reggae – but are instead the core tracks that influenced the late 70s UK generation – mostly roots reggae numbers from a few years before, whose politics and production really struck a chord with disenchanted youth in England! titles that include "Rebel" by Barry Ford Band, "The Barber Feel It" by Dr Alimantado & Jah Stitch, "Turn The Heater On" by Keith Hudson, "Pablo Meets Mr Bassie" by Agustus Pablo, "Jah Is I Guiding Star" by Tappa Zukie, "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" by Michael Rose, "Cool Out Son" by Junior Murvin, "Roast Fish & Cornbread" by Lee Perry, "Mr Cop" by Gregory Isaacs, "Two Sevens Clash" by Culture, and "Heavy Manners" by Prince Far-I.

please note : The LP version is a 12 track single vinyl version. all killer no filler!

'Sextant' from 1972 was recorded just before 'Headhunters', and can be seen in the same vein, but it's more than just an introduction to a masterpiece. It features a kind of post-modal, free impressionism while gracing the edges of funk. Three long instrumental tracks explore how far minimalism in jazz can go.

Betty HarrisThe Lost Queen Of New Orleans SoulSoul Jazz Records

Betty Harris’ The Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul features all of her classic deep soul, sister funk and northern soul songs recorded in New Orleans in the 1960s - all written, produced and arranged by the legendary Allen Toussaint, and featuring the cream of New Orleans musicians and the incredible Meters.

All of these singles featured here were released on Allen Toussaint and his business partner Marshall Sehorn’s local New Orleans label Sansu, widely distributed in the southern city but in only limited quantities elsewhere. As a consequence, Betty Harris’ music failed to achieve the commercial success of other New Orleans artists such as Lee Dorsey (who she recorded with) and The Meters (who backed her). And so at the end of the decade she stopped recording, retired from the music business to raise her family in Florida.

This is no reflection of the stunning musical quality of all these songs which encompass everything from southern soul, heavy funk, deep soul ballads and northern soul. Betty Harris has been a cornerstone of Soul Jazz Records’ New Orleans Funk and New Orleans Soul compilations.

Always soulful and always funky, Betty Harris’ music contains the essence of New Orleans music. She is the Lost Soul Queen of New Orleans.

This collection is released on CD, heavyweight gatefold double LP vinyl (+ download code) and digital and comes complete with full biography, original label artwork.

To coincide with this album New Orleans legend Betty Harris  will in the new year be performing two rare live UK shows at the 100 Club, London on Feb 17,2017 and Band on the Wall, Manchester on Feb 18, 2017.

Here's someone talking about the night back in the day (somewhere around the end of the 1990s):

"Tiny little blink-and-you-miss-it venue currently home to the fab Saturday Night Fish Fry night, The Fringe is a sweaty, grubby place - just the way we like it. The main dancefloor is downstairs and always rammed. Upstairs there's a smokey chillout room which comes complete with a bizzare S&M cage and plenty more fetish accessories. Look but don't touch is our advice".

Amazing sought-after record from the brainchild of one J. Pluncky Branch and one of the greatest underground jazz groups. Space Jungle Luv goes on a slightly different tangent from African Rhythms (1975) heavy funk, to a more spiritual soul jazz (and soul vocals provided by Eke-Eta Jackie Lewis), technical playing, mixing fusion, funk and Coltrane's modal style - expanding styles. Check out "River Luvrite", "Space Jungle Funk", "Soul Love Now", but all the tracks are killer!

Alan WakemanThe Octet Broadcasts 1969 and 1979Gearbox Records

"The next young generation of British jazz” has been applied many times to London’s current jazz scene, but this headline from Melody Maker was actually used to describe Alan Wakeman and his band back in 1970. And if a prototype for Binker and Moses' viscerally energetic semi-free sound is sought, you would be hard pressed to find a closer relative than the second part of climactic Disc 1 highlight 'Dreams'. Elsewhere, the dextrously varied compositions ooze curiously English-sounding brass band pastoral warmth, nods to traditional chorales
and on Disc 2 (from the 1979 broadcast) leanings toward atonal conceptual forms This unearthed gem features two separate Wakeman Octet ensemble recordings, made in ‘69 and ‘79 for BBC radio broadcast, both of which are being released commercially for the first time as a double album, mastered directly from the original analogue tapes and treated to the highest production values synonymous with Gearbox Records. Important for the quality of the music but also as a document of an under-explored era, the recordings offer a snapshot of a
time when the quality of British jazz was, as now, at a high. Featuring John Taylor, Alan Skidmore, Paul Lytton, Art Themen, Gordon Beck and many more.

Soul Jazz Club Flyer #3Nu Yorica! Opening night at GossipsSoul Jazz Records

Opening night! Latin, disco, soul and funk - a great combination! Our Nu Yorica night had been up and running for a couple of years in Notting Hill on Monday nights and we decided to move to Gossips in Soho, London to make it a weekend club. Gossips was a fantastic 70s throwback club - complete with mirror balls and walls and red velvet-esque furniture - very faded glamour which suited us just fine. It soon became apparent that there were a few idiosyncrasies to the space - depsite its long history the club always had problems with neighbours so the music could never be pumped up loud enough. This got really weird when the DJ booth had to be moved to a different room to the people dancing! (try it!). Lots of good nights despite this!
