Kanaku Y El TigreQuema Quema QuemaStrut

Peruvian psychedelic folk collective, Kanaku Y El Tigre surface on Strut with long player 'Quema Quema Quema'.

'Quema Quema Quema' (meaning ‘Burn Burn Burn’ in Spanish) is the product of two years honing the Kanaku sound at the band’s Lima studio HQ and the result is a record which is feverish in intensity and which screams with joy and cries for help in the same breath. The album is a testament to the collective's new found approach with its euphoric, unapologetically feel-good hooks littered with electronic jitters, ghostly delays, serene Hawaiian slide guitars and a chorus of other-wordly vocal harmonies.

Mulatu AstatkeNew York-Addis-London : The Story Of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975Strut

An essential compilation showcasing defintive tracks from cult ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke on Strut!!!

Vibraphone and keyboard player, master arranger and bandleader, Mulatu Astatke is one of the all-time greats of Ethiopian music and the creator of his own original music form, Ethio jazz. Through the acclaimed Ethiopiques album series and through featuring on the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers, his music has belatedly reached a global audience and a new, younger generation of fans. Last year, he recorded an inspired new album with London psych jazz band The Heliocentrics for Strut’s ‘Inspiration Information’ studio collaboration series. Now, the good peple at Strut have for the first time anywhere have compiled the definitive Mulatu career retrospective covering his landmark ‘60s and ‘70s recordings

Mulatu is a true pioneer of African music. He was the first Ethiopian musician of his generation to travel extensively and to record abroad – he studied in the UK in Wales and at Trinity College Of Music in London, cutting his teeth on the buoyant London jazz scene of the early ‘60s. He became the first African student to attend Harvard and he lived and recorded in New York, developing a unique sound that fused Western jazz with traditional Ethiopian melodies.

Tracing the progression of his Ethio jazz experiments with full access to all of the labels for whom he recorded, Mulatu Astatke: New York-Addis-London is the essential Mulatu. Covering his first recordings in the UK during 1965, his groundbreaking fusions for the small Worthy label in New York and his key ‘70s recordings back in Addis on Amha,

Includes extensive sleeve notes from Miles Cleret from Soundway Records and photos!

London, UK based trio return with their third, essential album release!

The beauty of 'Better Times' (broken up into "colour references" that are "suggestive of mood and tone"), lies in the "openness to form and structure these tunes, whilst a sense of groove and melodic development is maintained throughout. The confidence and versatility of the musicians is key, and so is the interaction between them, characterising a natural flow of unfolding musical ideas."

                      LP (Coloured)

Expanded LP edition of ‘dub poet’ Linton Kwesi Johnson’s classic 1984 album, featuring the original album + three bonus tracks. Bespoke gatefold sleeve with enhanced artwork.Remastered at Abbey Road, released on heavyweight YELLOW coloured vinyl. Produced by Linton Kwesi Johnson and the legendary Dennis Bovell (‘Blackbeard’), the album continues LKJ’s fierce, politically-charged view of Britain at the time. His outspoken comments on the 1981 Brixton riots, the New Cross fire that killed 13 black teenagers and confronting the National Front are all tackled but with an accessible and strident dub-reggae beat.Extensive liner notes from the original LP, by the late political activist and journalist Darcus Howe, are included in the package. Darcus was depicted in the recent Steve McQueen film, ‘Small Axe: Mangrove’ on BBC TV. Out of print on vinyl for many years.

Carla Whitney (with Choker Campbell and the Super Sounds), a relatively unknown soul gem that has flown under the radar since its release 46 years ago. Backed by Motown royalty Choker Campbell, the velvet-throated Whitney is like Aretha, Marlena Shaw and Vicki Anderson all rolled into one, flitting from cottony crooners to full-out funk stormers. Campbell was the leader of Motown’s live band, the saxophonist and conductor who kept any number of Motortown Revue shows driving along. A respected leader of men, and later a talented producer. Somehow in 1975 the nearly 60-year-old Campbell managed to find his way to Canada, where he hooked up with the little-known but dyno-voiced Carla Whitney in Toronto, producing the only LP she would ever make and issuing it on the then-obscure Attic label. For the first time since its original release Attic are reissuing the album for RSD 2021, at a lot cheaper price than the original copies, if you can find one (£500!) 180g heavyweight vinyl.

500 pressed on black vinyl. As the Stax/Volt Revue was busy touring the world during 1967, the city of Memphis had become the place to cut soul records. America’s record companies were sending artists down in droves to grab a piece of that magical sound the city’s recording engineers and producers were conjuring up. Yet Stax wasn’t the only place in town cutting hit records. While Sam & Dave were recording Soul Man at Ardent Studios, Chips Moman was cutting James Carr’s The Dark End of the Street at Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios. Moman also had a couple of studios of his own, East Memphis and American Sound, where John Richbourg recorded many Sound Stage 7 artists. This LP brings you sixteen tracks cut in the city during that golden year. It features some artists you know and others you may not, and ranges from upfront dancers to deep soul ballads – Memphis Soul ’67 at its very best!
