Known for his analogue-saturated soul revivalism and meticulous ensemble work, Leon Michels lets the arrangements breathe here, foregrounding groove geometry and tonal grain. 'Drumline' sets a taut, percussive thesis before 'Magica' and '24 Hr Sports Theme No. 1' unfurl with cinematic poise. 'Oakley's Car Wash (feat Dave Guy)' pivots on brass flare and clipped rhythm guitar, while 'Eastside' and 'Cortex' hum with low-slung bass elasticity. Later, 'Take My Hand (feat Rahsaan Roland Kirk)' frames a spectral sax passage within plush keys and measured swing. Without vocals, the record reveals its sinew and circuitry, a study in craft and rhythmic exactitude.
