Heatsick Snakes & Ladders EP Sounds Of The Universe / Soul Jazz Records

Trippy experimental club tracks from Steven Warwick aka Heatsick exclusive to our Sounds Of The Universe imprint. Limited to 300 copies - available only direct from our store or websites

All artwork designed by Heatsick himself and includes 12 X 12 hand-screen printed numbered artwork.

"Snakes & Ladders" - where Casio stabs and a barking bassline builds up to a stretching crescendo of white-noise percussion - a rhythm track from the Music Box heyday performed in striking Casio tones.

The ultimate night driving music  - "Time Smudge" is an interstellar journey through trippy space pads and grinding pedalled bass.

    Heatsick explains:

"Snakes & Ladders deals with game theory on the grid, slithering around precariously only to fall down a worm(snake?) hole on Time Smudge, reprogramming the ride"

Kassem Mosse / Simone WhiteThree VersionsHonest Jon's

Simone White's folk induced stylings get a trio of stunning remixes courtesy of Kassem Mosse. 'Flowers In May' weighs in at over nine minutes as it is taken into an epic, textured, evocative place oozing lush electronics and soothing pads. 'In The Water Where The City Ends' is a haunting affair aided by clicky woodblock rhythms. 'Long Moon' rounds off the EP as a rich sonic tapestry which ambles along gently with downbeat jazz percussion. Top notch!

Africa BoogalooThe Latinization Of West AfricaHonest Jon's

Beautiful funky percussive Afro-Latin compilation on Honest Jon's!

West African music has always incorporated music from other continents, American funk, soul and rock for instance, but less well known is the latin influence. Of course, much of Latin and especially Cuban music is derived from Africa so in many ways the rhythms were simply returning home! This superb compilation of rare tracks explores those Latin influences in West African dance music as it emerged in the 1950s right up to the 70s. 'African Boogaloo' includes celebrated artists such as 'Orchestre Poly Rhythmo' alongside virtually unknown artists like 'Amara Toure'. Inspired by Salsa and Afro-Cuban greats such as Johnny Pacheco, Alfredo Valdes and Alfredo 'Chocolate' Armenteros, the music has a distinctly latin flavour whilst incorporating traditonal african-jazz and highlife!

These recordings capture a unique period in African history: it was the end of war and colonialism, independence was imminent and future tyranny had yet to begin. The mood was one of freedom, joy and optimism, and that feeling translated into the music. Enjoy!

    Heatsick Convergence No 'label'

Brimming with stimuli from these four minimalist drum machine workouts from Heatsick.

Warming up with cute chords on "Benelux" before opening up in the 2nd half of the tune with grizzly bass, tight Chicago groove with mad-hatter style free jazz strings. Really good.  Druggy, dubby grooves on "Spacescape". The flip, "Convergence" has a melting pot to sounds, mashing up off-kilter african drumming, deep Chicago house and oddball synth action. Quirky DJ tool "The juggler" rounds things off.

        K Frimpong & His Cubano FiestasGhana 1977: Rare Afro-Funk & HighlifeContinental

The second of two self-titled albums released during Ghana’s music explosion of the 1970’s, K. Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas (1977, Ofo Bros) is a celebratory and powerful follow up to the album that made them famous. Backed by the mighty Vis A Vis band (here renamed the “Cubano Fiestas”) Alhaji K. Frimpong and company create a sinuous, infectious, funky sound that once heard can’t be forgotten. This fusion of James Brown and Fela inspired rhythms with more traditional Ghanaian Highlife, despite having been created nearly 35 years ago, still sounds stunningly fresh today. Tattered original copies of the LP trade hands for hundreds of dollars. Continental Records USA is proud to present for its premiere release the first complete vinyl reissue of this essential West African masterpiece.
