The second LP release on Leng Records is the fourth from German band Mountaineer. Joining Leng label mates such as Cantoma (Phil Mison), Ray Mang, Idjut Boys, Lexx and Mudd on ‘The Real McQueen’ they deliver a subtle blend of summer pop and bossa-folk which comes across like some kind of Brazillian country lounge cocktail bar.

Mountaineer started out life as the project of German singer/songwriter and Hamburg-based Henning Wandhoff. His debut album ‘Sunny Day’ saw a limited release but the restrictions of solo recording didn’t provide the creativity he desired and he was soon looking for other musicians to collaborate with. A few years and a number of band member changes later he found his perfect writing and recording partner, Frank Mollena. They are both multi-instrumentalists with Henning playing acoustic guitar, drums, congas, percussion and providing the vocals on ‘The Real McQueen’ and Frank playing bass, keyboards, electric guitar and programming the drum machines. The bands recording line up was completed by Alexander Rischer and they set out to rejuvenate their collective love of the classic LPs from the late 60s and 70s.

Inner City Beat !Soul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records new release Inner City Beat! Detective Themes, Spy Music and Imaginary Thrillers  is a unique CD (and 2LP) release + an exclusive limited-edition specially created 60-page graphic novel (by the mysterious cult 1960s pulp-fiction writer Mark ‘Badly’ Antringham).

The music on the album is a killer selection of funky, deep, rare, exciting and dancefloor heavyweight ‘spy themes’, ‘detective music’ and thrillers from the 1960s and 1970s. The music spans heavyweight break-beat funk, deep and heavy jazz, super-catchy mod themes, imaginary super-charged orchestral soundtracks and more.

These tracks are put together from British library music companies (DeWolfe, KPM, Conroy, Amphonic) all of whom supplied music regularly to television and films around the world during this period, often for use in detective and spy programmes, series and films.

Created as work for hire in anticipation of television or film usage, many were never broadcast and have thus remained unheard, stored in the vaults for many years. Other tracks featured were used as incidental or title music in long-forgotten 1960s detective and cult programs.

And whilst the names of the artists and composers featured on this album have remained relatively obscure (Syd Dale, Reg Tilsley, Johnny Pearson, Barry Stoller etc), the music they created is in fact some of the most well known and highly accessible music in the world - due to its widespread usage on these detective and thriller (and many other genre) television shows and films during this period.

In the 1960s and 1970s, these British music libraries used to promote these recordings to television and film productions on limited-run vinyl pressings (usually housed in generic sleeves). Mostly pressed in runs of less than 1000 copies, the best and rarest of these original records are today highly sought after items and included here is a fine selection of some of these rare, collectible and very groovy tracks.

To accompany this unique album, Soul Jazz have also commissioned the creation of a special 60-page graphic novel which features the stunning artwork of the elusive illustrator John C. Patterson in partnership with the celebrated 1960s pulp fiction cult novelist Mark ‘Badly’ Antringham. The graphic novel is set in the imaginary seedy streets of East London in the 1960s in a world full of corrupt police, political intrigue and violent sadistic criminals.

As well as the CD release this album also comes as a heavyweight deluxe gatefold super-loud double vinyl release (with free download code). The graphic novel comes free with the physical release (CD and double vinyl LP) of the album Inner City Beat.

There is also a worldwide digital download release for this Soul Jazz Records release.

"The collection demonstrates how some short theme tunes and pieces of incidental music also received serious play as stand alone tunes." The Irish Times

Dance ManiaHardcore Traxx: Dance Mania Records 1986-1995Strut

Strut team up with the legendary Dance Mania Records for their first ever full label compilation. Dance Mania has wielded its influence heavily across dance music since its first breakthrough club smash in ’86, Duane & Co’s ‘J.B. Traxx’, offering a raw, DJ-led alternative to the Chicago powerhouses of Trax and DJ International.

Dance Mania became a key player, unleashing uncompromising anthems like Robert Armani’s ‘Ambulance’ and ushering in ghetto house with Traxmen and Eric Martin’s ‘Hit It From The Back,’ as BPMs became faster and lyrics became ever more X-rated. A new wave of producers including DJ Deeon, DJ Funk, Slugo and Paul Johnson all appeared on Dance Mania, recording prolifically and honing the new ghetto style, stripped back and raw.

Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing As SocietySoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records’ new Punk 45 album charts the rise of underground punk and post-punk in the UK from 1977-81.
Punk 45: There is No Such Thing As Society. Get A Job, Get A Car, Get A Bed, Get Drunk! Underground Punk in the UK 1977-81 is the second volume in this series, released following on from Soul Jazz Records’ recent massive deluxe 400-page Punk 45s cover art book edited and compiled by Jon Savage (author of the seminal book on punk, England’s Dreaming) and Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records).
While the first album in this series, Punk 45: Kill The Hippies! Kill Yourself!, focused on underground punk in America, this album charts the rise of punk and post-punk in Britain in the years 1977-81.
This new Punk 45 album features a collection of seminal, classic, obscure and rare punk and post-punk singles from the likes of The Art Attacks, The Mekons, TV Personalities, Swell Maps, and many more – charting the rise of independent music and Do It Yourself culture that exploded in Britain in the wake of punk.
The album comes complete with text, biographies on each of the bands, exclusive photos and original record artwork.
The album is released on CD with outsize large booklet and thick slipcase and is also available as a limited-edition super-loud, super-heavy double gatefold-sleeve vinyl edition complete with full sleeve-notes.
Vinyl comes with free download code.
Also available as worldwide digital release.
"Famous punk bands such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash grabbed headlines as they captured the spirit of discontent in mid-Seventies Britain. Meanwhile they inspired thousands of teenagers to learn the very rudiments of music, shout about one thing or another and, if they got their act together, record a single or two before disintegrating. Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing As Society proves what diamonds in the rough those singles so often were."

Fleetwood Mac The Balearic Sound Of Fleetwood Mac Sunkissed

Choice Balearic cuts from new label Sunkissed! Kicking off the beach party is Arthur Baker’s incredible extended dance version of the Mac classic ‘Big Love’ that became an staple at the early Ibiza parties as did the next track ‘Ricky’, a lost 7” B-side also caned on the White Isle in the late 80s. Finally on this side is the more up-tempo disco-tinged ‘Keep on Going’ keeping the floor moving. Kicking off the B-side is the mesmerisingly dreamy groover ‘Hypnotised’ a true Balearic classic followed by two more sunkissed delights, the sublimely sensual ‘Brown Eyes’, and finally ‘World Turning’ a bluesy stormer with some amazing percussion that also found much favour in Ibiza. An essential slab of vinyl and a must-have for that perfect sunset record box.

From forming The Skatalites, at age 15, alongside Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook and others, to his work as writer, arranger, producer at Studio One records during the sixties, writing and playing for artists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and The Heptones (to name a few), to his career as a solo artist as well as leader of bands such as The Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors and The Sound Dimension, Jackie Mittoo is at the heart of reggae music. He was one of the instigators of Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae. In the seventies, DJ music and Dancehall were based upon classic rhythms of the sixties, many using the instrumental tracks that Jackie Mittoo created at Studio One at this time.

This compilation features the work of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One. It features music recorded as a solo artist (as opposed to the numerous singers that he accompanied). Most of these are taken from his recordings in the mid sixties where he was recording on an almost daily basis at Studio One's Brentford Road studios developing the funky reggae sound that was his trademark.

Soul Jazz Records are releasing this CD as the first of a series of Reggae artists to be covered following the success of the 100% Dynamite releases. Jackie Mittoo is as much an icon of Reggae as he is to fans of Funk music. He is without doubt the funkiest keyboard player ever to come out of Jamaica !

Cameroonian funk, originally issued in 1981 by Phonodisk, the most ambitious Nigerian label at that time. Producer Tony Essien was on the lookout for a successor to Kris Okotie, who had abruptly defected to EMI, and the music is devil-may-care brilliant, with the Mighty Flames band bringing a touch of Roy Ayers, Kool And The Gang and Chic to the party.
