Time feels porous on 'Future Present Past', the second Impulse! statement from Irreversible Entanglements. Largely recorded at Van Gelder Studio, it carries the weight of the history of that legendary jazz den without ever sounding burdened. Camae Ayewa's incantatory voice cuts through surging saxophone, restless trumpet and rhythm section undertow, with a sense of liberation at the heart. The ensemble moves between rupture and reflection, structure and spontaneous combustion with telepathic ease. This is protest music that is fierce, searching and defiantly alive.
