Brainfeeder’s de facto New Age guru and all-around production wizard, Matthewdavid, returns with a sophomore full-length, entitled 'In My World'. Unlike prior LP 'Outmind', which was a largely ambient and inward journey, 'In My World' expands exponentially to a multitude of lavish sound worlds ranging from the lush, vaporous pop dub of the title track, to ethereal love jams, IDM breakbeats and a languorously crystallized cover 'Perpetual Moon Moods'. Every densely atmospheric track is liberally punctuated with speaker-rattling sub-bass. Yet more quality from the Brainfeeder crew.

The New Jazz OrchestraLe Dejeuner Sur l'HerbeDecca

If one were asked to pick an album that represented the best of British jazz in the 1960s, 'Le Déjeuner Sur l’Herbe' by the New Jazz Orchestra would be a serious contender. Recorded in September 1968, it draws together many of the key streams that had developed in British jazz in the preceding years, and also presages much of what was to come. Notwithstanding the line-up, which includes some of the very best British jazz musicians directed by an inventive and ingenious leader in Neil Ardley, the session features pieces written by the most distinctive jazz composers active in Britain at that time alongside idiosyncratic interpretations of works by John Coltrane and Miles Davis. And it’s all captured beautifully by engineer Howard Barrow and producer Tony Reeves and it features a stella cast of some of the greatest musicians, not just from that era or genre but beyond; Jack Bruce, who would become one of the founding members of Cream, Barbara Thompson, Ian Carr, Michael Gibbs, Dave Gelly, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Jon Hiseman, who went on to form one of the greatest jazz/progressive/rock bands – Colosseum.

The AwakeningMirage (Remastered Edition)Black Jazz Records

          **First time reissued on vinyl!**

The only “group” on the Black Jazz roster, The Awakening today should be heralded as one of the great bands in early ‘70s jazz. That they’re not is the result of the Black Jazz label’s distribution woes; witness the fact that original copies of both of their records for the imprint command prices in the hundreds of dollars if you can find them at all. Mirage is their second (1973) album, the last one they made together; it boasts the same Chicago-based, AACM-centric line-up as the first, with the notable addition of bassist Rufus Reid on a couple of tracks. Spiritual jazz, free jazz, soul jazz, fusion jazz, you name it—The Awakening take all those threads common to early ‘70s African-American music and, like any great ensemble, weave them into a beautiful sonic garment that’s greater than the sum of its parts. The Mirage is a bit less political/pan-African than Hear, Sense and Feel, its predecessor, which definitely owed some of its feel to the band’s Art Ensemble of Chicago/AACM roots; this record is a little more abstract, a little more varied in its moods and textural coloring, yet no less powerful and transporting.

Henry FranklinThe Skipper At Home (Remastered Edition)Black Jazz Records

Bassist Henry Franklin’s 1972 release for Black Jazz, The Skipper, is one of the highlights in a label catalog full of many, and his 1974 follow-up, The Skipper at Home (“The Skipper” is Franklin’s nickname), lives up to its predecessor’s high standard and might even surpass it. Which is no surprise given that a lot of the same players are on it, including trumpeter/flugelhornist Oscar Brashear, tenor/soprano saxophonist Charles Owens, and pianist Bill Henderson (here billed as Kemang Sunduza). But The Skipper at Home also boasts ace talents like keyboardist Kirk Lightsey (memorably featured on the Roland Haynes Black Jazz release 2nd Wave), trombonist Al Hall, Jr. (who appeared on Black Jazz releases from Doug Carn, Chester Thompson, and Calvin Keys), and drummer Leon “Ndugu” Chancler, who’s played with everyone from Miles Davis to Joe Henderson. The result is an album that, like The Skipper, is rooted in bop but one that nods to some of the currents that were swirling in jazz at the time; it’s a little freer, a little more electric. And, as is true of just about every Black Jazz release, the ensemble work is remarkably intuitive and swinging, driven by Franklin’s melodic, inventive bass playing.

Ken Wheeler and The John Dankworth OrchestraWindmill Tilter – The Story Of Don QuixoteDecca

Wheeler met and played with the rising artists of London’s free jazz scene; players such as Trevor Watts, Derek Bailey, and Evan Parker, musicians who would challenge the conventions of the day, eschewing formal composition and structure to embark on group improvisation. For a musician thoroughly schooled in all the conventions of charts and dance bands as Wheeler was, this was a radical departure. Wheeler’s contributions proved his ample flexibility and showed he was capable of inhabiting both the free environment and the more formal and controlled settings of a big band and orchestra. This was shown most clearly on his debut album, Windmill Tilter, recorded for Fontana with the John Dankworth Orchestra. The album features a young John McLaughlin on guitar along with bassist Dave Holland and a roster of talented and well respected musicians playing on one of the greatest modern jazz big band and orchestral albums.

Emotional Rescue continues to dive into the back story of One Blood, a lovers rock powerhouse who deserve revisiting now appreciation for lovers rock is at an all time high. One Blood recorded a cover of Willie DeVaghan's soul classic 'Be Thankful For What You Got' in 1980, and it gets a re-cut here for those who need to get hold of one of the sweetest versions of an evergreen anthem. Rather than the original B-side 'Ebony Eyes', Emotional Rescue have instead opted for cult Japanese producer Slowly to deliver a tasteful dub remix which gently buffets this universally adored song into outer space.

The great thing about Emotional Rescue's deep dive into reggae and lovers rock is that the tracks they decide to press up are the ear-snagging curveballs that present something just a little bit to the left of purist, trad reggae. That's the case once again with 101 Band's 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling' - a curio from Haile Maskel released via his own, LA-based label Opulence (Sound). It's a hybrid kind of sound, sitting somewhere between boogie, island funk and roots, and it goes down very smoothly indeed. On this reissue, you get treated to the original 7" mix plus an alternative 'Dub Take 2' version which stretches out over an extended run time on the B-side.

          Sugar MinottI Remember MamaEmotional Rescue

Reggae star, vocalist, producer and sound system operator, Kingston JA born Minott released over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One, Wackies, Suffering Heights and his own Black Roots label. His distinctive soulful voice pioneered the Dancehall style and following his UK hit "Hard Time Pressure" he moved to London in 1980, adopting the rising Lovers Rock sound. On a visit to Wackies' offices in Soho he met Steve Parr, who had recently opened a studio next door. Keyboard player for the likes of Desmond Dekker and Geno Washington, Parr moved into composition, mixing, sound engineering and production, before setting up the Sound Design Studio in Dean Street. Principally a studio, the meeting with Minott hatched the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities. Produced by Parr, he played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald. With Minott's heartfelt lyrics, this marriage created a one-off, a ground-breaking synthesised 4/4 rhythm track with funk groove and soulful vocals. Released on 7" and 12", the versions noticeably differ and is the perfect closing to the DISCO REGGAE LOVERS series.

          Ernest RanglinIn The RainEmotional Rescue

Surely one of the all-time greats of instrumental reggae reveries, Ernest Ranglin is widely adored for a very good reason. He was there at the very beginning, and stayed relevant throughout successive decades of Jamaican music. In 1982, Ranglin teamed up with the mighty Noel Williams in Florida and recorded a sweet cover of The Dramatics' R&B classic, 'In The Rain'. It's a heady, dreamy version with a sumptuous, widescreen sound, as romantic and immersive as the original version was and this is the first time ever on a 45. But that's not all - on the flip, Mukatsuku gets busy with a frankly stunning dub which loops up flute licks in a masterful manner.

Emotional Rescue's Lovers Rock revival shows no signs of slowing as they turn their attention to the archives of Dada Music and the haunting sound of Dambala. The UK roots-reggae group had a sizable impact with their Zimbabwe / Visions Of War single in 1978, but it's their 1983 debut album Azania which is the source of this spellbinding single. 'Lorraine' is a ghostly, heavy-hearted skanker draped in digital reverb and angular new wave guitar chops, sounding absolutely reminiscent of the era and not quite the average cookie cutter reggae track. The original would be strong enough to carry the single on its own, but then for good measure the mighty Lexx comes in to dub it out on the flip.

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jazz icon Don Cherry and textile artist Moki Cherry (née Karlsson) met in Sweden in the late sixties. They began to live and perform together, dubbing their mix of communal art, social and environmentalist activism, children’s education, and pan-ethnic expression “Organic Music.”

Organic Music Societies highlights models for collectivism and pedagogy deployed in the Cherrys’ interpersonal and artistic work through the presentation of archival documents alongside newly translated and commissioned writings by musicians, scholars, and artists alike.

Covering Don Cherry's ensembles during his Sweden years and beyond. Two selections of Moki’s unpublished writings—consisting of autobiography, observations, illustrations, and diary entries, as well as poetry and aphorisms—are framed by tributes from her daughter Neneh Cherry and granddaughter Naima Karlsson.
