DJ Shadow's 1996 debut stitched instrumental hip-hop from samples alone, the California producer coaxing whole weather systems from an MPC60 and a turntable. 'Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt' lets piano and drums loom out of the murk, then 'Midnight In A Perfect World' moves with the type of melancholy that has since been copied to death. Plenty tried to follow and very few found the same doorway.
