Dutch-Surinamese multi-instrumentalist and jazz heavyweight Ronald Snijders, who blends Latin, Brazilian, and Surinamese influences with the electric sound of Weather Report, released four groundbreaking albums between 1977 and 1983 that have since become holy grails of deep, forward-thinking fusion. Over forty years, 50 releases, and 5,000 compositions later, Penta marks a powerful return for this unsung jazz great—ready to finally receive the recognition he deserves.
Born in Suriname and the son of renowned composer and orchestra leader Eddy Snijders, Ronald made his name in the Netherlands. His 1977 debut album, Natural Sources, was a remarkable feat of self-determination. Released on his own label, Black Straight Records, the album featured only original compositions, with Snijders playing all the instruments and producing and mixing the project himself.
Defying the expectation that Surinamese or Caribbean musicians should focus solely on “party records,” Snijders carved out his own path, cutting his second LP, A Safe Return, in similarly independent circumstances.
