Classic 1964 Braziliian film released on DVD!

This is the film that launched the Brazilian Cinemo Novo move ment - a kind of equivalant to the French Nouvelle Vague and bearing certain similarities to the Brazilian Tropicalia movement - in which young directors with a singular vision set out to challenge poiitical and artistic expectations by producing their own films, which often dealt with themes of poverty and politics.

Shot on the Brazilian Sertao, the bleak parched lands of Northern Brazil, this beautifully shot film combines themes of folklore and mysticism with the story of a poor cowhand who goes on the run after murdering his boss, takes up a nihlistic svengalilife figure, and begins a life of crime.

In common with many of Brazil's radical artists of the 1960s, director Glauber Rocha was eventually forced into exile in the 1970s as the military dictatorship took power.
