    Studio One Disco Mix

Studio One's music in the 1970s took the label to new heights. The new style of Disco Mix brought many areas of Reggae together Roots, Lovers, Disco and Dub all came together in extended form, re-versioning classic hits, experimenting with new studio technology, over-dubbing, syn-drums and more producing what many fans describe as the most creative and innovative phase in the history of the legendary Studio One Records.

This Studio One Disco Mix album includes many sought after classic tunes only ever released in very small quantities (on Studio One's very first 12" records as well as it's infamous Music Lab 10"s out of New York) and consequently many of these track s have been unavailable since their day of release. Studio One Disco Mix features many of the classic Studio One artists such as Alton Ellis, Sugar Minott, Jackie Mittoo and Willie Williams (with his classic re-versioning of his own "Armigideon Time") alongside less well artists such as Doreen Schaeffer, Judah Eskender Tafari and George Dudley and many more.

Two Synths, A Guitar (And) A Drum Machine - Soul Jazz Records #1 Post Punk DanceSoul Jazz Records

    OUT NOW!

Soul Jazz Records new ‘Two Synths, A Guitar (and) A Drum Machine’ is a new collection of current D-I-Y post-punk bands shaped by the mutant sounds of no wave, punk funk and New York Noise bands from the late 70s and early 80s that collided with the world of underground dance music found at the Paradise Garage, Mudd Club in New York City (ESG, Arthur Russell, Bush Tetras, Talking Heads, Suicide, Liquid Liquid).

Other influences cited here include Manchester and Sheffield’s industrial post-punk sounds of the 1980s (Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Gang of Four) as well as the 1970s German electronic experimentalism of Cluster, Neu!, Harmonia and Can.

Featured artists from around the globe include Los Angeles D-I-Y band Automatic, New Fries from Toronto, artist/music collaborators Toresch from Germany, Susumu Makai from Japan/UK, Vex Ruffin from the Phillipines/California and Madmadmad, Gramme, Tom of England and other UK groups

That all the bands featured here manage to make distinctive contemporary music out of these 80s roots is testament to the wide range of other musics that are seamlessly absorbed into a modern melting pot of sound – hip-hop, the electronic European avant-garde, rave culture, and more.

The double vinyl comes in two editions:

SymaripThese Boots Are Made For Walking / That's NiceHarlem Shuffle

Issued on 7" vinyl for the first time, this is a licensed release of the song extracted from the Skinhead Moonstomp LP on Trojan Records in 1970, 50 years ago. This is a cracking Boss Reggae cover of Nancy Sinatra's mega hit and a huge early Reggae anthem. Incredibly this very much in demand song has never been released on 7" vinyl up to now!

On the flip That is Nice has only been available on the Skinhead Moonstomp Special Edition CD. This is a Symarip original and it is the complete opposite of These Boots Are Made For Walking. Here the gritty voice of Roy Ellis serves admirably the sad, pensive melody and simple lyrics of this melancholic love ballad. Simply beautiful. A very rare gem and a perfect finish to this outstanding double sider single.

Brand new Studio One release - includes bonus tracks!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Studio One is proud to announce the release the album version of Coxsone’s Dramatic And Music Centre. The physical versions of the album to be issued in October, 2020 with additional tracks including unreleased songs from the period.

When this was released in 1961 it became the first album put out by Clement Dodd and its appearance marked a shift in Mr. Dodd’s strategy. Long a fan of US R&B and Jazz releases he had been collecting American albums for some time and now began his own experimentation in the long-playing format. Jamaica at that point had not entered the album market for its popular local productions which were till then exclusively found on 45s. Studio One was to go on and release a staggering number of albums throughout the label’s long and storied existence.

The SkatalitesThis Is Jamaica SkaStudio One

      Brand new Studio One release!

      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 'This Is Jamaica Ska' album, when first released, followed in the footsteps of the successful Ska Authentic releases and also marked the first time that Clement Dodd began to showcase on LP his new discovery, the Wailers, who had begun tearing up the dances in Kingston with “Simmer Down”. This song had been held for exclusive use in the dances before it was finally put out on 45, now it gained album status marking the increased visibility of the group in the marketplace. In addition to “Simmer Down” two other songs by the Wailers are also found on the album; “How Many Times”, and the blazing cover of Jimmy Clanton’s “Go Jimmy Go” which Clement Dodd had proposed for the group to incorporate into their repertoire.

Also found on This Is Jamaica Ska are songs by Bajan Jackie Opel, a prolific hit maker for the label in this period, with the ribald “Push Wood” and the popular duet “The Vow” with Doreen Schaffer. Anchored by the instrumentals of Roland Alphonso (Clement Dodd’s good friend), Don Drummond’s “Roll On Sweet Don” (here in it’s correct form), The Skatalites mento inspired Salt Lane Gal, and mighty vocal outings by the cream of the label’s stars this became a monumental release. Special mention to “Bongo Tango” with features what is basically a drum solo by Lloyd Knibb throughout the entire song! The cover for This Is Jamaica Ska alone is iconic in Ska circles and here taken from the original WIRL release.

Transferred in 2020 from the original master tapes This Is Jamaica Ska is a welcome addition to the Studio One Original Masters Series Archive.

KaS ProductBlack & Noir: Mutant Synth-Punk from France 1980-83Soul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records are releasing a collection of lost recordings by French mutant experimental synth group Kas Product, all originally recorded in the period 1980 – 83.

Kas Product formed in 1980 in Nancy, France, as an electronic duo comprising ex-psychiatric nurse Spatsz on electronics and rhythm machines and Mona Soyoc on vocals and guitars.

Kas Product feature on Soul Jazz Records’ recent 'Punk 45 – Les Punks: The French Connection'. Mainly recorded on early tape, synth and drum machines Kas Product’s mixture of Spatsz’ hypnotic, electronic and angular hard-edged beats matched to the spiky vocals and guitar work of Soyoc led to comparisons with Suicide, Liliput/Kleenex, Cabaret Voltaire as well as to the group being forerunners of the cold wave/ synth wave movement. Perhaps closer still is the Industrial sound of bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Einsturzende Neubaten. At the start of the decade Kas Product's 'So Young But So Cold' was also the title track of a defining collection of rare underground electronic French coldwave/synthwave bands on the Tigersushi label.

The recordings here are taken from their early releases on the local Punk label from Nancy, France at the start of the 1980s, mostly recorded on a 2-track recorder in their bedroom, which led to them signing to RCA in 1982. These songs were first put together on CD by the French Fan Club label in 1990.  Essentially the group split-up in 1988 but Kas Product still come together to perform live today most recently in Paris, New York and Los Angeles. In 2012 their major label debut album was re-released in France.

Soul Jazz Records are releasing this album on limited-edition 1000-copies worldwide vinyl LP (with download), CD and worldwide digital.

      Don CherryMusic, Wisdom, LoveFinders Keepers

Another essential release from Finders Keepers!

Reaching a near-mythical status amongst fans of free jazz’s most worldly intrepid explorer, these seldom heard Paris soundtrack sessions known as ‘Music, Wisdom, Love’ have evaded collectors’ grasps and confused historians for exactly 50 years. Instigated in Paris in 1967 and filmed during Don’s downtime on a visit to the Chat qui Pêche nightclub in March 1967 (where he played with Karl Berger, Henri Texier and Jacques Thollot), the bulk of this cinematic portrait was filmed on the streets of Paris under the direction of creative all-rounders Jean-Noël Delamarre and Nathalie Perrey who, as their careers bloomed, would become pivotal figures in underground French cinema - straddling La Nouvelle Vague, adult entertainment and cinema fantastique in what can only be described as speedball cinema.

Available for the first time ever and licensed from producer and director Jean-Noel Delamarre himself.
