Short Eyes (1977) Dir. by Robert Young, Music by Curtis Mayfield.

    Metrodome

Curtis Mayfield scored and composed the music for this realist portrait of New York melting-pot style prison life in 1977 - with a music style featuring wah wah guitar Super Fly style and latin percussion and barrio jams, some played out live in the film!. This was pretty much the last 'black action' film made in the US for many years and it's grim realism is at odds to the 'blaxploitation' -tag it at first appears to be. In fact Curtis bookends the genre from the 1970 score to Super Fly to this Short Eyes, a film in which he not only supplys the score but also acts in, and sings a mind-blowing 'Doo Doo Wap is Strong in Here' in one sequence. A seriously heavy film - a black action precursor to Alan Clarke's Scum!
