This 1978 roots reggae LP, containing ten songs, was only released in Jamaica on the GG label, and includes masterpieces like 'Africa Now', 'Wondering', 'Corruption' and 'Wicked Is Down On Me'. The song 'The Gate Of Zion' was a re-make of 'Nuh Follow Babylon' from the previous released 'Slave Call' album. A former Studio One classic 'I'm Gonna Take Over Now' was included re-titled as 'I'm Gonna Take It Over' besides an updated version of Sir J.J. hit 'Selah'. After 41 years and through much positive energy and efforts, the Dutch Jamaican Art label presents 'Open The Gate Of Zion' LP again for a broader public. Besides all ten songs, carefully transferred from the original two-track master tapes, it also has new art-work/front cover, a gatefold sleeve and a bonustrack. The beautiful 'Rastaman Song' was previously released only on a limited run of a 12-inch record (GG label, Jamaica, 1980). The special disco-mix that appears here is never issued on vinyl before. It's a comforting thought that we still can enjoy the music of a true Jamaican hero, mr. Leonard 'The Ethiopian' Dillon.

Since it first appeared in 1976, King Tubby's dub-wise reworking of tracks by Yabby You's Prophets project has become a sought after item amongst reggae aficionados. Remarkably, it has never been reissued before, making this first vinyl edition in 23 years a must-have for those addicted to weighty bass, heavy riddims and echoing effects. There's much to enjoy from start to finish, including the delay-laden horns and gentle grooves of "Fair Lady", the surprisingly cheery skank of "Tear Gas In Waterhouse", the seductive solos of "Tradition Skank" and the low-slung, bass-heavy throb of "Serious Rebellion", a stripped back dub straight from the top drawer.

The UpsettersScratch The Upsetter AgainAntarctica Starts Here

"The inventive record producer and vocalist Lee 'Scratch' Perry was involved in every musical shift of note in his native Jamaica, from the rhythm and blues that pre-dated the arrival of ska in the early 1960s through the slower and more spacious rocksteady style that appeared mid-decade and, of course, the frenetic sound of reggae, which he helped to birth as an independent producer during the late 1960s. Operating as 'The Upsetter' from his base in a downtown Kingston record shop, Perry found his greatest success with instrumental music during this phase, the organ and saxophone re-castings of standard vocal issues proving exceptionally popular overseas.

"Scratch The Upsetter Again surfaced early in 1970 as a largely instrumental set, but with dreamy reverb a hefty feature and keyboards veering away from standard organ motifs. Dave Barker, who was soon to hit the pop charts as part of Dave & Ansel Collins, tackles The Shirelles' 'Will You Still Love Me' in soul reggae mode, only for Perry to shift things towards the emerging dub spectrum with 'Take One.'

"As Perry inched ever closer to the dub experimentation he would turn into an art form at his own Black Ark studio later in the decade, Scratch The Upsetter Again shows him moving away from the standard approaches of his competitors in his quest to test the very limits of recorded sound. And reggae was all the richer for it."

Gil Scott-HeronVillage Gate New York 1976Klondyke Records

New York's WRVR-FM captured a treasured broadcast by Gil-Scott Heron. His appearance alongside Brian Jackson and the Midnight Band at the Village gate in 1976 has since garnered widespread affection and admiration amongst collectors, fans and critics alike. This monumental performance comprised of only six songs, but the energy and spirit of that performance evoked acute political and spiritual awareness, rampaging through global and local injustices with humility and conscience firmly intact.
