Gregory Uhlmann's Extra Stars gathers the LA guitarist's recent run of exploratory instrumental work into a resplendent suite for processed guitar, as a small synth ensemble backs him like a nebula behind. A frequent collaborator of the likes of Perfume Genius and Hand Habits, and a core member of the trance-jazz outfit SML, Uhlmann has spent the past few years drifting further into ambient composition and chamber-jazz interplay; these 14 miniatures pivot on pastoral electronics and looped guitar figures, rarely relying on percussion despite close, palpable rhythms. 'Lucia' with Alabaster DePlume rings in breathy sax through tidal reps, while longer pieces like 'Days' undam the basin for precipitous dirges. Inspired in part by night skies over California's Bristlecone forests, Uhlmann manages to stitch an exquisite melodic tapestry from even the quietest sound fabrics.
