    Bomb LP!

The legendary tune “Play On Mr. Music” from a documentary film “Roots Rock Reggae” comes alive. This compilation celebrates some uncommon gems from the greatest golden years of the Black Ark Studio and Lee Perry’s works.

“Play On Mr Music” by the Upsetter Revue featuring The Heptones, The Congos and Junior Murvin, had long been the Holy Grail for roots reggae connoisseurs, until Rocka Shacka issued it on a 10-inch EP. The result of an impromptu studio jam (captured on celluloid for Jeremy Marre’ s Roots Rock Reggae documentary in May 1977), the track celebrates the undeniable pull of Perry’ s musical artistry, with both musicians and onlookers enhanced by the uplifting qualities of a marijuana spliff.“Milte Hi Ankhen” by Sam Carty is a full vocal cut to the oriental dub known as “Bird In Hand” which was included the dub master piece “Return of Ape”. You can also enjoy the unreleased dub mix of the deep rasta tune “Rejoice Jah Jah Children” by The Silvertones, also the unreleased take of Carlton Jackson’s big tune “History”, an irie roots rock version of Curtis Mayfield “People Get Ready” by Junior Murvin and the soulful Perry’s vocal on “Soul Fire”. LP comes with free colour poster and sleeve notes on both vinyl & CD by David Katz.

Legendary trumpeter Harry Beckett has become incredibly collectable in recent times, with this album reaching significant sums, appealing to both Brit-jazz fans and the digging community after those elusive open drum breaks. The music is amongst the best he made in his career and features the funky guitar of Ray Russell in a number of superb Latin and Caribbean jazz fusion workouts. A gem and a lost classic!

    • FIRST OFFICIAL RE-ISSUE OF THE ICONIC ALBUM ON CD• MOST TRACKS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE DIGITALLY• SLEEVE NOTES BY LEE PERRY BIOGRAPHER, DAVID KATZ

Released in 1972, the Junior Byles single ‘Beat Down Babylon’ provided one of the clearest indications to dateof the impending roots sound that would soon dominate reggae. The immense popularity of the Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry-produced 45, both in Jamaica and the UK, swiftly prompted a best-selling long-player of the same title, issued later that year.

Comprising ten of the singer-songwriter’s recent recordings for the mighty Upsetter, the LP has since been re-issued on vinyl on a number of occasions, but has never been officially made available on CD until now.

Now, at long last, “Beat Down Babylon” does finally make it onto the format, with the original track-listing bolstered by the remainder of Byles’ released work for Perry, which includes numerous Jamaican hits, most notably the 1974 smash, ‘Curley Locks’.

    KaleidoscopeSoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records’ new album ‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ brings together many of the ground-breaking artists involved in the new jazz scene that has developed in the UK over the last few years. Featured artists include Matthew Halsall, Yazmin Lacey, Ill Considered, Tenderlonious, Theon Cross, Emma-Jean Thackray and many, many more in this ground-breaking release.

As well as sharing a pioneering spirit in these new artists’ approach to frontier-crossing musical boundaries, a further theme of this album is that many also share a determination to independent practices - and most of these artists’ recordings featured here are either self-published or released on independent labels. While the attention of this new wave of jazz artists has up until now has been London-based, this album shows how this movement is spread across the whole of Britain (and indeed beyond).

‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ shows that while there is commonality in these artists approach to music, there is a wide variety of styles – from deep spiritual jazz, electronic experimentalisation, punk-edged funk, uplifting modal righteousness, deep soulful vocals and much more.

Soul Jazz Records’ new release comes as a superb one-off pressing special deluxe triple album edition which comes with a bonus limited-edition one-off pressing 7" single, a standard triple album, and a deluxe double CD pack. This album also comes with extensive sleevenotes, artist interviews and exclusive photography.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Keith RoweGroovy SituationUpsetter

Keith Rowe is the Keith of Keith And Tex. They had a massive hit with 'Stop That Train' produced by Derrick Harriott. That was the Rock Steady era. By the mid-seventies Keith was solo and did a nice recut of 'Tonight' recorded in America and produced by himself.
A move back to Jamaica - connected him up with Lee Perry. Old Scratch was making a name for himself again and was involved in a three way studio battle with Channel One and Joe Gibbs - looking for a new sound. Keith's 'Groovy Situation' was one a great example of this. Although it seems it never gained a release in Jamaica.

      Black UhuruPainTRS

Black Uhuru first formed in 1972, initially as Uhuru (Swahili for ‘freedom’). The group has undergone several line-up changes over the years, with Derrick “Duckie” Simpson as the mainstay. As a unique singer in his own right, Delroy “Junior” Reid had the opportunity to reach a wider international audience when he was offered the chance to be the lead singer in Black Uhuru in 1986. Always a strong follower of Black Uhuru, and with a similar vocal style, Reid elevated the group to another level delivering militant albums like ‘Brutal’ and ‘Positive’. ‘Pain’ is a superb little Digi tune recorded with respected heavyweight Steven Stanley in 1987 during the recording of the ‘Positive’ LP. Later it also appeared on Reid’s own JR Label as “Pain On The Poorman Brain” but with a different mix and listening experience.
