    By the early 80s, Detroit-born singer, songwriter and producer Leon Ware had had already influenced the direction of modern soul, writing and producing for Marvin Gaye, Minnie Riperton and Michael Jackson. Stepping back into the spotlight a decade after his debut, this 1982 release finds Ware refining his own voice with quiet assurance. His elastic falsetto drifts through lush arrangements overseen by Marty Paich, opening with the hazy glide of 'Slippin' Away' and the tender slow-burn of 'Lost In Love With You'. 'Why I Came To California' stands out for its reflective warmth, while 'Somewhere', featuring Flora Purim, leans into gentle romantic interplay. Initially overlooked, the record now reads as a subtle, forward-looking statement from a master stylist.
