Father and many sons collaborate for the first time! Legendary spiritual jazz musician Philip Cohran is joined by a band comprised of his eight sons, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble!
Philip Cohran grew up in St Louis, post-war home of jazz stalwarts like Clark Terry and Oliver Nelson (both of whom he played with), not to mention a genius called Miles Davis. In in the mid '50's after moving to Chicago, he made a small group with John Gilmore and in 1959 he was invited to join the Sun Ra Arkestra. In 1961, Sun Ra moved east and Philip founded his own Zulu Records, settled in Chicago were he had his large family and became their music teacher.
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Philip Cohran compliment each other brilliantly, HBE with their rich, layers of mesmerising horns and Cohran's Frankiphone (a modified electric thumb piano), this best shown on the ten-minute track "Spin". An album that is contemporary whilst still steeped in jazz tradition.
