Murderous on dub for some time, “Cambridge Road” (named for Green King Cuts’ HQ where the tune originated) is a weighty, slyly menacing 140 rocker featuring Akcept’s signature syncopated percussion chops & a slithering, minimalist bassline. A disquietingly distorted hook, pitched & chorused vocal snippets and test tones lead the way through a dark dance equal parts eyes down & wariness - danger lurking around every corner.

“Over & Out” is the secret weapon, a loping, lumbering behemoth of dubwise built for serious Sounds, a stew of filtered hi hat, heaving bass, sampled drum fills, swung shaker, oddly-looped reggae horns, and claustrophobic spaces navigated by cagey reverbs.

For decades, any sound system worth their salt, headed to the dub cutters to get a piece of the “ Late Night Blues” riddim. Acetate after acetate of the riddim rumbled through speakers from Brixton to the Bronx making it a certified sound system classic. Now, Pressure Sounds comes with four exclusive cuts of the Late Night Blues rhythm. The first 2 cuts combines Diggory Kenrick’s always-in-demand flute with the legendary Matic Horns on Side A. The flipside takes the riddim into deep, dubbed-out territory with two dangerous cuts. A welcome addition to the Late Night cult!

    Lloyd McNeillElegiaSoul Jazz Records

Super rare deep spiritual jazz album with a heavy Brazilian influence featuring Nana Vasconceles, Dom Salvador, Portinho, Cecil McBee and more. Originally released privately by the artist and flautist Lloyd McNeill in 1980 and out of print for nearly 40 years.

Soul Jazz Records' newly remastered edition of ‘Elegia’ is released as a limited-edition 1000-copies worldwide on Vinyl (+ download) and 1000-copies worldwide CD edition.
Lloyd McNeill is a cultural polymath – a multi- disciplinarian flautist, painter, academic, poet, and photographer – who has worked with everyone from Mulatu Astatke to Nina Simone, Eric Dolphy and Nana Vasconcelos (and as a painter was befriended by Picasso!). McNeill grew up during the era of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and his life and work is a reflection of those ideals. All of his music was only ever released on his own private-press record label, echoing the Civil Rights and African-American themes of the era - black economic empowerment and self- sufficiency – and there is a beautiful spirituality in all his music.

This is the fifth Lloyd McNeill album that Soul Jazz Records have made newly available and follows on from the earlier McNeill albums ‘Asha’ (1969), ‘Tanner Suite’ (1969), ‘Washington Suite’ (1970) and 'Treasures’ (1976) all now reissued by Soul Jazz Records.

Peter GreenThe End Of The GameKlimt

Peter Green's legendary debut album was released in June 1970, only a month after leaving Fleetwood Mac the iconic band he formed in 1967. The End of the Game takes a radical shift from Green's previous works with the band. The music, produced through a long free form studio session based on almost non existent structures, takes us through a deep hypnotic sonic experience. Green on guitar was joined by Alex Dmochowski on bass, Godfrey Maclean on drums, Nick Buck on keyboards and British blues legend Zoot Money on piano. End of the Game stands as one of the great psychedelic Rock rituals of all time.

An extremely rare album left by Detroit-based jazz keyboard player Johnny Griffith known for the album "Together, Togetherness" on RCA. An album covering "From The Music Connection" with Freddie Redd Quartet and Jackie McLean. The Music From "The Connection" was composed by jazz pianist Freddie Redd for Jack Gelber's 1959 play The Connection. This first recording of the music was released on the Blue Note label in 1960. It features performances by Redd and Jackie McLean Jack Gelber originally planned for the play to feature improvised music performed by jazz musicians who would also play small roles in the production. Freddie Redd, however, persuaded Gelber to include his original score. Redd re-recorded the score later in 1960 as Music from the Connection.

Rubadub RevolutionEarly Dancehall Productions From Bunny LeePressure Sounds

“Rub A Dub Revolution: Early Dancehall Productions From Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee” their first foray into Mr. Lee’s transformative rub a dub work from the late 70s to mid-eighties.

In the late 1970s, Kingston was in the midst of a transformation. The ghetto population, brutalized, cowering behind locked gates during the internecine warfare of the decade, had had enough. Gunshots, street battles, homemade bombs be damned, the population was sick of the politics, sick of the violence and ready to move on. Slowly, but surely, the dancehalls, all but shuttered during the 1970s were returning to life. In those open lawns and sweaty clubs where draws of weed were sold by the handful, a cold Heineken battled the heat and the girls were ready to rock their hips in a rub a dub style the quasi-mystical, mathematically complex sound of roots and dub ceded to more earth-bound concerns. A host of new singers and DJs flocked to the sound systems with lyrics and style that spoke to the dancehall itself. This new breed of “rub a dub soldier” eschewed the international market, and spoke to Jamaicans in their own language, about their own concerns from sex to humor to the day-to-day problems of suffering in the ghetto. A new sound was needed and the spare, uncompromising music of the Roots Radics, bolstered equally by the mixing prowess of Scientist and the financial shenanigans of Henry “Junjo” Lawes, came to the rescue. With a tuff as nails drum and bass soundtrack, the Roots Radics, almost overnight, became the number one band for Jamaican recordings.

Bunny “Striker” Lee was always attuned to even the slightest change in the musical landscape of Kingston. He quickly picked up on this shift in taste and knew he had to compete or be left behind. By 1980, Striker had gathered a stable of young artists around his core veterans like Cornell Campbell and Johnny Clarke to build riddims and tunes to speak to this new “dancehall” vibe. With a deep knowledge of classic songwriting, an ability to effectively communicate with musicians and an infusion of new talent, Striker Lee’s new direction quickly hit gold. “Rub a Dub Revolution” mines this often overlooked period with tracks of rarities like the Paragons obscure “Place Called Zion”, classic tunes such as Don Carlos’ iconic “Pass Me The Lazer Beam” and extended 12” mixes featuring DJ verses by Papa Tullo, Purpleman, Simple Simon and others that showcase the excitement, experimentation and raw energy of this transformative period of Jamaican music. Rub a Dub Revolution will be released in a gorgeously designed 2 Lp vinyl set and a double CD with 3 bonus tracks. Both formats include extensive track notes by Diggory Kenrick and an extensive interview with Bunny Lee.

The Skatalites: Independence Ska and The Far East SoundSoul Jazz Records

Fantastic new collection of rare and classic killer ska from the legendary Skatalites, one of the most important groups in the history of Reggae.

This album was first released only as a limited-edition  collectors 7-inch box set (now deleted) and is now available for the first time as a double LP edition (+ Download Code), CD and digital release - complete with 10 extra bonus tracks and new extensive sleeve notes!

The Skatalites brought the sound of Jamaica to the world. At the start of the 1960s, in the space of just a couple of years Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Johnny ‘Dizzy’ Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett and others defined the exciting beat of ‘Ska’ as the sound of newly independent Jamaica.

As the house band at Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s newly launched Studio One Records at 13 Brentford Road, the group comprising the finest jazz musicians on the island played on literally 1000s of recordings – Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and The Maytals, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis and many, many more.

During their existence (1963-65) The Skatalites also recorded 100s of their own songs, released either under their own name, or The Studio One Orchestra, or that of band members Drummond, McCook etc. This is the first collection on Soul Jazz Records to bring you some of their finest material – from classics such as ‘Guns of Navarone’, ‘El Pussy Cat Ska’, ‘Christine Keeler’ through to some serious rarities such as Dizzy Johnny and The Studio One Orchestra’s ‘Sudden Destruction’ and Don Drummond’s ‘Coolie Boy’.

The Skatalites’ ska sound brought together aspects of jazz, latin, rhythm and blues, proto-Rastafarianism (tracks such as ‘Full Dread’, ‘Beardsman Ska’) and more. The intensity and energy of their sound was matched by the experimentation of the troubled genius of Don Drummond whose ‘far east’ modal trombone sound added a complex melancholy to the music of the Skatalites (the group split-up after Drummond was charged with murdering his wife, dancer Margarita Mahfood).

      • The Skatalites – Guns Of Navarone

      • The Skatalites – El Pussy Cat Ska
      • Dizzy Johnny and The Studio One Orchestra – Sudden Destruction
