The image on the cover of this record as far as anybody can reasonably tell is probably the only photograph of The Hygrades in existence. Apart from those who were lucky enough to see the band in action before it broke up fifty years ago, nobody up till now has had the slightest clue what its membership even looked like. But so much about The Hygrades has remained submerged in mystery, even as the group’s legend has grown.

In recent years, some of their tracks like “Keep On Moving” and “In the Jungle” pop up in DJ mixes and curated playlists, in tv commercials, on movie soundtracks, charging through the airwaves like brief, fervent transmissions from an alternate world where the atmosphere is composed of twenty-one percent funk, six percent blues and seventy-three percent soul.

Yet the question persists: Who exactly were The Hygrades?
