Lee Perry Black Ark DaysPlay On Mr MusicRock A Shacka

    Bomb LP!

The legendary tune “Play On Mr. Music” from a documentary film “Roots Rock Reggae” comes alive. This compilation celebrates some uncommon gems from the greatest golden years of the Black Ark Studio and Lee Perry’s works.

“Play On Mr Music” by the Upsetter Revue featuring The Heptones, The Congos and Junior Murvin, had long been the Holy Grail for roots reggae connoisseurs, until Rocka Shacka issued it on a 10-inch EP. The result of an impromptu studio jam (captured on celluloid for Jeremy Marre’ s Roots Rock Reggae documentary in May 1977), the track celebrates the undeniable pull of Perry’ s musical artistry, with both musicians and onlookers enhanced by the uplifting qualities of a marijuana spliff.“Milte Hi Ankhen” by Sam Carty is a full vocal cut to the oriental dub known as “Bird In Hand” which was included the dub master piece “Return of Ape”. You can also enjoy the unreleased dub mix of the deep rasta tune “Rejoice Jah Jah Children” by The Silvertones, also the unreleased take of Carlton Jackson’s big tune “History”, an irie roots rock version of Curtis Mayfield “People Get Ready” by Junior Murvin and the soulful Perry’s vocal on “Soul Fire”. LP comes with free colour poster and sleeve notes on both vinyl & CD by David Katz.

    Robert FfrenchI Am WonderingJamwax

Robert Ffrench originally laid this one down in Creative Sound Studio in Kingston in 1985, but it could well be hot off the press yesterday. Here it comes as a nice extended mix by DJ Shortie with some superb studio effects and spaced out trickery. Its sleek futuristic sound comes from the interstellar dancehall lead synth, a stunning thing that twists your mind inside out while the clean drums glide below. Add in the vocal toasts and it's a timeless classic. On the flip, Shortie Ranks offers "Dance In A Skate Land", a version that is subtle treated, with the echo upped and the lead drawn out to take you into another dimension.

Winston JarrettUnity And LivetyRoots & Culture

This CD could also be called Showcase, being a large collection of songs (20!) That ranges from the end of the 60s to the 70s. The rhythms are provided by the Barrett brothers or by Sly & Robbie, on the keyboard Winston Wright and Gladstone Anderson on the piano and Redcliff Bryan on the guitar. Unity and Livety is a mainly "reggae" record: there is a beautiful This Feeling Of Love that Jarrett sings in a style reminiscent of the mr soul of Jamaica Alton Ellis; there is Man Of the Ghetto, best known in the version by Phillis Dillon (Woman Ghetto) but our Winston is credited with; Where is the Ark and Jungle Collie are typically Seventies reggae, the lyrics are Rasta and meditative.

      CultureThe Nighthawk RecordingsOmnivore Recordings

7 Track EP from Reggae Legend Culture. Includes 4 Previously Unissued Tracks. Liner Notes From Nighthawk Founder / Producer Leroy Jodie Pierson. Culture began recording in 1976 with an early cut of This Time which was only released on an obscure Jamaican single. Composed in response to the state of emergency declared by the Jamaican government in that year, the early recording is a tame and lyrically altered version of the original song as finally presented on this album. “We couldn’t do it in dem time, We gonna give you the real ‘This Time’.” During the late 1970s Culture recorded seven fine albums, three for Joe Gibbs, three for Sonia Pottinger, and one issued in America by April Records, which Joseph Hill regarded as a bootleg. Culture was truly in their prime when they recorded the material included on this album. The first three tracks were recorded in 1981 with backing by the Roots Radics. The remaining tracks were taped in 1983 with backup by The Wailers band. Calling Rastafari, Dem A Payaka, and This Time were all originally included on the 1982 Nighthawk compilation album, Calling Rastafari. Most of the tracks released on the classic, roots reggae compilation, were recorded during a three-day session in 1981 at the Harry J studio in Jamaica. The Culture songs appeared alongside tracks by Gladiators, Mighty Diamonds, Wailing Souls and others, with most of the songs being unique to the album including those by Culture. Can They Run and Mister Musicand their respective Versions were recorded two years after Calling Rastafari was issued and languished in the Nighthawk vaults until the release of this special, limited-edition EP.

            The KingstoniansHold DownHarlem Shuffle

            Just in..don't delay limited stock.

The Kingstonians were a relatively short-lived Jamaican band whose greatest work was produced by Derek Harriott between 1968 and '70. It was at the tail end of this period that they recorded their sole album, "Sufferer", an early reggae classic featuring a swathe of sought-after cuts. It's from that set that these two tracks are taken. For the record, both have appeared on 7" singles before, but are so hard to find that collectors are willing to spend up to 500 Euros to find original copies. A-side "Hold Down" is particularly potent, with the vocal trio's fuzzy vocals rising above a killer early reggae rhythm much in Hammond organ stabs, warm bass and clipped guitars. "Nice, Nice" meanwhile is a more up-tempo affair that gives a little more prominence to a typical early reggae guitar riff. Together the two tracks make for a suitably scintillating package.
