Ricardo Villalobos is a name that strikes fear into the heart of the short attention-spanned minimal enjoyer. The Chilean-German's sprawling productions can be over 30 minutes long, and are more so sonic adventures than simply minimal techno tracks. His remix of Iranian master percussionist Mohammad Reza Mortazavi's track 'Swamp' almost perfectly encompasses what fans love about Villalobos' productions. Granted, it's not quite 30 minutes, but it's still long enough to be split into two parts to fit on the vinyl.
Villalobos' reworking of the Reza Mortazavi's rich Persian percussion is hypnotic, as clicks, clacks and pounding drums ripple throughout the track, almost as if Villalobos' version is being played live too, having a slightly raw energy about it. About a third of the way through, a plucky string loop comes in and further drives the rhythm of the track before being joined by ominous textures and FX that nod to Villalobos' classic production flair. 24 minutes manages to fly by when Villalobos is in the driver's seat.
