Following their 'Salah Ragab And The Cairo Jazz Band Present Egyptian Jazz' LP, Art Yard bring us another two tracks of stunning Egyptian jazz - both previously unreleased. Recorded in Heliopolis, Cairo circa 1973, both sides of this 45 offer up a distinctly north African take on traditional jazz sounds. "A Tribute To Sun Ra" comes across like some long lost Moondog track, full of snaketime percussion and Egyptian horns. Backed with "Latin In Cairo" a curious mix energetic, calypso / Cuban melody. Limited to 500 copies.

The Sun Ra ArkestraThe Antique BlacksArt Yard

In this album Sun Ra blends elements of free jazz, off-key synth explorations, and experimental theatre into an other-worldly concoction that doesn’t crop up anywhere else in the Arkestra’s massive discography.

Although Sun Ra wouldn’t have called Earth home, there were a couple of cities that proved to have considerable significance on him and his music, and Philadelphia was one of the places that he really felt in his element. The vitality you can hear on Antique Blacks is a testament to the unique energy of the community around The Foxhole Cafe in Philly.

Legendary session recorded in Milan in 1978, this quartet recording gives John Gilmore, Michael Ray and Luqman Ali the space to improvise and solo more extensively than with the full Arkestra. The result is an astounding synergy of individual virtuosity and group interplay, but it's the man himself who arguably steals the show with the rhythmic atmospherics of "Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens".

BACK IN PRINT!!!!!!! 2xLP now with bonus download code!
Compilation of classic recordings from the heaviest group in the history of reggae!

Sound Dimension have recorded some of the most important songs in reggae music; songs such as 'Real Rock,' 'Drum Song,' 'Heavy Rock,' 'Rockfort Rock,' 'In Cold Blood' -- all classic songs that have become the 'foundation' of reggae music, endlessly versioned and re-versioned by Jamaican artists since the time they were first recorded to the present day.

As the in-house band at Studio One in the late 1960s, Sound Dimension played alongside everyone from The Heptones, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Marcia Griffiths and more.

Similar to their U.S. counterparts, The Funk Brothers at Motown and Booker T. and The MGs at Stax, Sound Dimension recorded on a daily basis incredibly catchy and funky tunes and matched by a seamless musicality.

Featuring musicians of the calibre of Ernest Ranglin, Jackie Mittoo, Eric Frater, Leroy Sibbles, Don Drummond Jr., Deadley Headley and more; Sound Dimension existed from around 1967-70 and all the recordings featured here were originally released during this period.

      REVIEWS:

"A juicy compilation that does justice to the forgotten of the history of reggae." LES INROCKS

"Since copyright laws were virtually non-existent in Jamaica for most of the 20th century, it is common to hear innumerable mutations of any given riddim track. Discerning the creators of each song can be a daunting task. From 1967 to ’70, however, the Sound Dimension was the house band at Studio One, creating memorable cuts for the lyrical pantheon of Jamaica to sing and toast over. This 18-song collection of instrumentals shows how pivotal these men were in the sonic architecture of reggae." XLR8R

"Legendary Studio One band Sound Dimension find themselves on the receiving end of another celebrative retrospective courtesy of the ever-reliable Soul Jazz, bringing together classic recordings of 'Mojo Rocksteady', 'Real Rock', 'Heavy Rock'Rockfort Rock', 'Jamaica Underground' and more. The breadth of this band's influence can be heard throughout the annals of reggae, with these timelessly funky cuts revisited and re-versioned by anyone and everyone since being committed to tape in the '60s. Another great document from Soul Jazz" BOOMKAT

90 Degrees of ShadeOver 100 Years of Photography in the CaribbeanIntroduction by Paul Gilroy

Fantastic new deluxe large format hardback 12" x 12" book from Soul Jazz Books featuring 100 years of photography in the Caribbean.

From Calypso to Vodou, Communism to Reggae, Colonialism and the Slave Trade, Rum and Revolution, Industry and Tourism – over 100 years of photographing the Caribbean is captured in this book.

The image of the Caribbean is as much a creation of the outsider as it is the complex identity of its people – a melting pot of races created out of the participants of the 400 year slave trade – enforced Africans, indigenous Americans and their colonisers – French, Spanish, Dutch, English.

From luscious and tropical backdrop of tourism and hedonism, to colonial outpost and revolutionary threat within North America’s own backyard the identity of the Caribbean stands at this intersection of tourism, the detritus of the slave trade and tropicality.

The regions politics span a hot bed of ideas and radicalism – from Castro’s Cuba, communist thorn in the side of North America, to the violent right-wing dictatorship of Haiti’s Papa Doc in the 1960s; also from Michael Manley’s Jamaica in the 1970s to Eric Williams’ Trinidad in the 1960s.

Hundreds of fascinating and unique photographs span more than one hundred years of Caribbean history, culture and industry as well as the subsequent diaspora of its people to America, England, Canada and elsewhere.

Deluxe CD, 2xLP (+ free download) and worldwide digital

Available in all good retail and internet stores  from 2 June 2014 or direct from Soul Jazz Records right now!

This new album features the music of Calypso in its many styles. Included is music from its birthplace - the island of Trinidad - as well as a number of other Caribbean islands (including Jamaica and the Bahamas) and its subsequent onwards journey (Britain, Panama and the United States), recorded during the years 1955-69.

Calypso is one of the most exciting and enduring forms of musical expression to emerge from the beginning of the 20th century - swinging, persuasive rhythm, brilliantly expressive melodies and lyrics of great humour and wisdom.

Calypsonians songs play out a role in society similar to the storytelling Griots of West Africa (and the corresponding music of Kaiso); with their own tales about popular and incredible news items, modern life, local politics all mixed up with sexual innuendo, one-upmanship, comedy and more.

At its source, Calypso is intricately and inextricably bound to the social history of Trinidad and its myriad of traditions, beliefs, folklore and fables. As the music spread around the world, both from the diaspora of many of its performers, as well as its commercial success, the subjects of songs similarly took on local topics.

The most notable singer of Calypso in England was the Trinidadian Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts), who came to Britain in 1948 on HMS Empire Windrush  (along with fellow Calypsonians Lord Beginner and Lord Woodbine).

Here on this album you will also find other members of Calypso’s aristocracy & royalty – including Lord Cobra, Lord Hummingbird, Lord Growler, King Fighter, Lord Byron, The Mighty Viper, Lord Ivanhoe & more.

The songs vividly capture the popular news stories and fashions of the era - the first Man on the Moon, James Bond’s Pussy Galore, bed bugs, Voodoo, love in cemeteries, West Indians in England, Bossa Nova, the Iron Curtain, and a story of a white man who had a black heart transplant operation.

This album celebrates a criminally unsung and under-documented art form in the modern age and comes with extensive sleevenotes on the history, social context and geography of Calypso, as well as exclusive and stunning photography, original artwork and notes on all the artists and songs featured.

CD with 50 pages of notes, labels and exclusive photos in slipcase. 2xLP gatefold heavy vinyl + full notes, insert, free download code. Worldwide Digital release.

        REVIEW;

"Decades before hip-hop became black America's most visible news source, Caribbean and British calypso stars were singing about current events in lilting tunes so seemingly carefree you barely noticed how sharply they were sticking it to the man. With chatty and conversational voices front and center, carnival stars like Viper, Lord Hummingbird and Lord Flea delivered their sass amid suave, jaunty horns and percolating Afro-Caribbean percussion. This collection focuses more on pop culture than on politics: Lord Cobra's enthusiastic account of the 1969 moon landing, for example, is followed by Young Growler's bawdy celebration of James Bond consort "Pussy Galore." Calypso's predominant voice, Lord Kitchener, is represented by the hilarious "Love in the Cemetery," wherein a resident warns him, "Mister, you be brave / To be bringin' your girlfriend atop me grave."

        Studio One DancehallSoul Jazz Records

Fantastic, mind-blowing, awesome new collection of killer Studio One dancehall and proto-dancehall!

Featured here is a new collection spanning Studio One’s dancehall period – singers and deejays on classic Studio One rhythms, studio and electronic wizadry from the Brentford Road headquarters, lots of rare 12” singles, all effortlessly brought together to nice up the dance.

When Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd first ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the 1950s, fighting off the soundsystem competition of Duke Reid, King Edwards and others, few could imagine how far the reign of Studio One would last.

But the emergence of  ‘Dancehall’ as a distinct style of reggae at the end of the 1970s, as upstart competing producers began recording vocalists and deejays performing over replayed classic Studio One rhythms, in many ways made the influence of Clement Dodd’s vision more omnipotent than ever before (and lasting to this day).

Not surprisingly, Clement Dodd’s creativity and business acumen made him quick to respond to this musical phenomenon – and he soon began voicing the new stable of Studio One singers and deejays, such as Sugar Minott and Lone Ranger, over original classic Studio One rhythms recorded in the late 1960s – to produce some of the most innovative, time-bending and creative music of his career.

This album comes as CD with slipcase, super-loud, super-heavy triple vinyl album with free download code and as a digital download.
