Salem, Massachusetts might be infamous for its history of witch trials, but the city also harbours another form of dark magic in metalcore pioneers Converge. While active since 1990, the band's creative run with the current lineup of Jacob Bannon (vocals), Kurt Ballou (guitar), Nate Newton (bass) and Ben Koller (drums), since 2001's genre-defining staple Jane Doe, has been nothing short of immaculate. Known for their mercurial blend of abrasive, chaotic hardcore with dizzying time signature shifts and heaving sludgy metal, their unique and easily recognisable style has long since elevated their name to the standard of Radiohead or Deftones where their sound is their own. With that, the arduous wait for the band's 11th full-length follows on from 2021's collaborative Bloodmoon: I project with gothic songstress Chelsea Wolfe, but is the first true sole Converge work since 2017's magnificent The Dusk In Us. Recorded as always at guitarist Ballou's God City Studios and produced in-house, Love Is Not Enough is yet another bar-setting sonic cataclysm of musical dexterity married to visceral, violent displays of emotion, whilst delving into reflections on resilience, connection, and the weight of existence and fatherhood in such an increasingly cold world. Delivered in a succinct, definitive ten tracks, the best to ever do it have returned.
