Five years ago, Matt Culter aka Lone left R&S Records, an imprint he'd been associated with since the late 1990s, and popped up on the Hot Chip-affiliated Greco-Roman imprint. Here he returns with a fresh full-length, Hyperphantasia, a set he describes as "unhinged, unrestrained, self-indulgent, bat-shit pop music from another dimension". Of course, Cutler's definition of 'pop' tends towards the 'hyper-pop' and vintage dance-pop end of the spectrum, with his usual sonic trademarks - attractive synth sounds, vibrant electronic colours, loved-up pads and so on - mingling and mixing with madcap rhythms, sub-heavy bass, UKG-goes-pop grooves, rainbow-coloured ambient soundscapes and all manner of references to the music of his youth (ie the 90s). It's pop, Jim, but not as we know it!
