Bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann make up SML. Expanding their improvisationist ethos into a high-resolution, hyperrealist soundscape, they flicker back onscreen to greet us with How You Been, their second album and a bold step forward from 2022's Small Medium Large. Recorded live across LA, New York, Chicago, and Seattle, the album transforms performances into carefully post-produced compositions, blending modular synths, electronics, saxophone, guitar, and percussion with intuitive interplay, from the interlocking synths of 'Chicago Four' to the blastproof explorations of 'Brood Board Shroom' and 'Plankton', where ambient, pulsating thrums provide ample armourage. Dancefloor-ready cuts like 'Taking Out the Trash' contrast with the meditative, glissando-drenched closer 'Mouth Words', evidencing SML's foundational fusion of free improv, collective trust, and rhythmic drive.
