'Perpetual' shows a different side to Gideon Van Gelder, the pianist we already know from tracks like ?Touch? on Brownswood?s soul jazz conjurer José James? LP Black Magic, and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson. Influenced by a vast number of sources from brazilian guitar virtuoso Toninho Horta and pioneering jazz composer Andrew Hill, as well as tutors of his Vijay Iyer and Craig Taborn, and his mum, whose melodies Gideon likes to work into his own compositions sometimes. A brilliant jazz pianist, Van Gelder's music is very emotive and with his six piece band knows how to tap into the heart strings, pulling intervals and transitions out of the piano like an expert osteopath.
