California-born, Paris-based composer Frank Maston continues to refine his luxuriant "avant-lounge" sound with a new 7" on Be With. 'Foreign Affairs' is all soft-focus strings, Bacharach flourishes and glistening detail and the kind of track that feels equal parts cocktail bar and widescreen cinema. On the flip, 'Liaison' pushes further into exotica, its swooning string section and ghostly piano painting a sunset scene that's both romantic and slightly eerie. With over a dozen musicians involved, the arrangements shimmer with detail, yet Maston keeps it light on its feet. A charming pair of pieces that confirm his knack for making retro stylings feel fresh and cinematic.
