Cuban-born percussionist Candido de Guerra Camero (1921 - 2020), known simply as Candido, was one of the foremost pioneers of Afro-Cuban jazz and an innovator in conga drumming along with along with Diego Iborra and Chano Pozo. Candido was responsible for embracing the tuneable conga drum, the frst to play multiple congas, and for developing techniques that all conga players use today.
Candido played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Billy Taylor, Stan Kenton, among many others. As a leader he recorded seventeen albums for several different labels, including Blue Note with the album 'Beautiful (1971), and Chesky Records with Inolvidable with Cuban singer Graciela. Presented here is hi Candido complete 1962 LP Conga Soul, featuring Jimmy Cleveland on trombone and pianist Lalo Schifrin, also responsible for all the arrangements.
