The Bèlènou Group was founded in 1980 in Martinique by Edmond Mondésir and Léon Bertide. Dedicated to bèlè music, a traditional Martinican music deeply rooted in African heritage, Bèlènou is still active more than thirty years later. Edmond Mondésir is a well-known cultural and political activist in Martinique; a singer, songwriter, composer, and musician involved in the independence and labor movements, as well as a philosophy professor, he also initiated the creation of the radio station APAL (Asé Pléré An Nou Lité). It was on the APAL label that the album Chimen Ta La was released in 1983. It is being reissued today in its original form, a double vinyl album, by a brand new label dedicated to African heritage in the diaspora: Léritaj, for whom this is their first release.
