    The SkatalitesBashakaJump Up! Records

LONG LOST ALBUM is back and now on VINYL. The Skatalites are more than a band, they are an institution, an aggregation of top-notch musicians who didn’t merely define the sound of Jamaica, but WERE the sound in the ’60s. Frequently credited as the originators of ska — the Skatalites’ various members banded together as both an original group and the often uncredited backing band for artists/producers such as Prince Buster and Duke Reid. Although the group officially existed in its original incarnation for less than 18 months (1964-1965), its members brought their signature styles to thousands of the island’s releases. Following a handful of reunions in the ’70s and early ’80s, the Skatalites re-formed for good in 1986 and, over subsequent decades, have included a rotating lineup of both original members and newcomers responsible for late-period highlights like 1994’s “Hi-Bop Ska” and 2000’s “Bashaka”, now reissued on vinyl for the first time. “BASHAKA” is an album lost in time, plagued by a label bankruptcy and released when mainstream’s support for the genre had waned. Simply put, this brilliant album never got the credit it deserves! Original members Lloyd Knibb, Lloyd Brevett, Lester Sterling and Cedric Brooks lead the charge into scorching ska instrumentals and rootsy jazz reggae, Doreen Shaffer adds beautiful vocals on ska tunes “Oh baby” and “Reach for the Sky”, while special guest Ken Boothe delivers the mid-tempo groover “I Never Knew”. Brand new updated art by Chema Skandal, pressed on clear yellow vinyl limited to 500 copies.

    Cornell CampbellHold OnSkankin' Society

The Gorgon in fine style! Back in 2017, Cornell Campbell teamed up with The 18th Parallel to put out the beautiful ‘Lovely Feeling’, a roots reggae 7” reminiscent of Randy’s early 70s sound. A few months later, Cornell and the Swiss band went back in studio to pay another tribute to the Jamaican sound of the 70s. Do you remember ‘Dance in A Greenwich Farm’ or ‘Two Face Rasta’ ? Kingston, 1975. Bunny Lee’s flying cymbals riddims mixed by King Tubby and his big knob, Cornell Campbell’s golden years.
Led by legendary drummer Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, The 18th Parallel tried to dive deep into the reggae of 1975 to bring back this feeling on ‘HOLD ON’: flying riddim, choping guitar, heavy filter mix by Roberto Sánchez and the one and only Cornell Campbell himself behind the microphone. Flash it!

Also known by his nickname "Gladdy", was a Jamaican pianist, keyboard player, and singer, who played a major part in the island's musical history, playing a key role in defining the Ska sound and the Rocksteady beat, and playing on hundreds of recordings as a session musician. This is a strong instrumental dub album he recorded at Channel One sometime in the late 70/80s but originally released in 1993 on London label Seven Leaves.

'Stamp 'N' Go' by Antonin Chatelain and Mathias Liengme (aka The 18th Parallel) is instrumental ska with a roots feel. A horns line that will stay in your head, with the addition of mind-blowing solos by talented musicians such as Anthony Dietrich Buclin, Michael Borcard and Alexandre Schneiter, not to mention the legendary Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace on the drums. The B side features an alternative filter mix by Roberto Sanchez.

    BoomboxSoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records’ new Boombox features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of rap records made in New York in the period 1979-82, all released on small, independent, often family-concern record companies, at a time when hip-hop music still remained under the radar.

This first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party on the block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. But where Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache or Babe Ruth’s The Mexican, these first rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes, whilst MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique sound that later became known derisively as old school.

And while hip-hop started in the Bronx, rap on vinyl began in Harlem where long-time established rhythm and blues producer-owned record companies such as Joe Robinson’s Enjoy Records, Paul Winley’s Winley Records, Delmar Donnel’s Delmar International and Jack Fatman Taylor’s Rojac and Tayster were the first off the mark to realise the commercial potential of rap music - releasing early ground-breaking records that all quickly followed in the wake of the first rap record, The Sugarhill Gang’s Rappers Delight, a million-selling worldwide hit.

This collection celebrates these first old-school rap records, bringing together rare, classic and obscure tracks released in the early days of rap.

Deluxe double CD-pack comes with slipcase, 40-page outsize perfect-bound booklet, extensive notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. Triple-vinyl heavyweight vinyl includes full artwork, text and notes as well as free download code.

**Essential issue!** Unreleased archival tracks from the On-U vaults! Serving the same purpose as the recent Return Of The Crocodile set did for African Head Charge, this LP illuminates the early development of one of the flagship acts on the label, allowing some truly magnificent versions to be heard for the first time. Mostly stripped-back raw takes, they highlight the rock solid rhythm foundation laid down by such incredible players as Style Scott and Charlie Eskimo Fox, as well as three vital soul-in-the-echo-chamber interjections from the late, great Bim Sherman. TraditionCaptain Ganja and the Space PatrolBokeh Versions

DON'T SLEEP....Limited press! back in stock for now..

Years before Scientist and Jammy battled the space invaders, Tradition dreamt up a sci-fi jazz/dub odyssey in north London. Captain Ganja and the Space Patrol is one of the most singular dub albums that barely saw the light of day. A conscious effort to create a new breed of dub centred around the cosmic synths and keys of Paul Thompson. Making use of an early Roland sampler, Tradition broke away from the standard drum / bass workouts that ruled the day. With the Captain, dub becomes an atmosphere, a feeling, not a formula - littered with baby’s cries, tribal chants, radiophonic noodlings and library soundtracks for space-age bachelor pads. Originally issued by Venture Records in 1980, this small run was easily lost beneath the weight of their huge vocal LPs for RCA and everlasting lovers-tinged tracks like ‘Movin On’,‘Breezin’ and ‘Summertime’. The experimental strains in one of their early 45s led the BBC to approach them about contributing to the Dr. Who soundtrack, Captial Radio did likewise for the Hulabaloo theme. Neither saw fruition and this facet of the band’s sound is easily forgotten by diehard fans.

“Raggamuffin Soldier” was recorded at Channel One Recording Studio in 1983 with Soldgie as engineer and a rhythm track played by Jolly Stewart and Daniel “Axeman” Thompson. Growing up in the Waterhouse neighborhood of Kingston, Jolly Stewart obviously developed this singing style and gave us a killer early digital dancehall missile with pure conscious lyrics “Raggamuffin soldier, big ina your area...me no deal with badness, me nah deal inna war, me is a raggamuffin soldier...mi raggamuffin ina foreign, raggamuffin sit down pon di riddim...how you know the raggamuffin?
