This is a seriously hyper-surreal story of how an African-American 'infiltrates' the CIA's elite espionage programme with his own agenda to bring about revolution in the inner-cities of America.

The near-legendary soundtrack is by Herbie Hancock in his most tripped-out funky Headhunters phase. Director Ivan Dixon had started as an actor in 'Nothing But a Man' - another great film (Malcolm X's favourite film, music from Motown) in the 1960s and had just directed Trouble Man (music by Marvin Gaye). Three years after The Spook he made the blockbuster 'Car Wash' - also a wicked film!
