G.T. MooreThe Harry J SessionsPartial Records

Recorded while Gerald was in Jamaica working on a project with Lee Perry in 1980.
The master tapes of the four tracks that were recorded at the Harry J sessions were only recently discovered. `Utopia' was the only track that had been given a final mix back in the day. It was released on 7" on the Black Star Liner later in the year and then reissued on Partial Records in 2014. The other tracks were never mixed until early 2017 when this task was undertaken by Dougie Wardrop. As well as mixing `Jerusalem' (Gerald did a later version of this tune for Rej Forte's Jah Works label in the early 1990s), `Working For The Dollar' and `Constant Spring', it was decided that `Utopia' should also enjoy a fresh mix.

As Serious As Your lifeJohn Coltrane And Beyond By Valerie WilmerSerpent's Tail

Truly seminal work, first published in 1977 by writer and photographer Valerie Wilmer, that details the incredible energy and characters behind the African-American revolution in jazz of the 60's and early 70's. As well as placing the 'new' music in its political and social context, there is also reference to the role of women, recording and getting the music heard, and entire chapters devoted to the following musicians: John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler and Chicago's AACM. If you're at all interested in the 'new thing' jazz or African-American politics of the 60's then you really do need to read this book! Seriously...

The More Axe series continues with edition No.4 that concentrates on the early rootsy dancehall scene 1979 onwards in Jamaica. Not only did the music change, the rhythms of bands like The Roots Radics and The High Times Band slowed it down again. This time the emphasis was on the power of the Bass line. With killer features on Sugar Minott, I Roy, Barrington Levy. Ranking Joe, Mikey Dread and many more.

            Barry BrownVibes Of Barry BrownRadiation

Vibes Of Barry Brown' is an album of deep roots reggae, surfaced in limited quantity in 1981 via Sonic Sounds' Gorgon imprint, the sub-label reserved for producers that lacked an established label of their own, and although production is not specifically credited, the album is likely a self-produced work, since Brown is credited as sole songwriter, just as he was on the self-produced 'Cool Pon Your Corner' LP from 1980. The albums are stylistically similar too, with Brown singing over hard roots rhythms, most likely laid at Channel One with the core of the Roots Radics, and voiced and mixed at King Tubby's.

"A long-awaited, in-depth study of the loft music phenomena of the 1970s. Based on firsthand accounts, it tells the story of musicians, largely African American, in this time of intense creativity and of self-determination. It is a story that needs to be told as the musical evolution, largely ignored, continues into the present."--William Parker, bassist, composer, and author

Soon after embarking on a career as a record producer in 1966, record retailer and jukebox businessman Karl ‘J.J.’ Johnson, enjoyed a series of significant Jamaican hits with a number of local artists, notably the Rulers and Carl Dawkins.

The hits continued throughout the rock steady era, with the Kingstonians and Eric Donaldson’s West Indians joining Johnson’s small, but popular roster of acts. These and many more feature on this, the very first compilation to focus on J.J. Johnson’s pre-reggae output.

A superb collection on its own or as a companion volume to the recently released “Reggae Power” 2CD anthology, this essential set includes 34 tracks new to CD and many more that have remained unavailable for years.
