    • 1. Yo Todo Tu Yo
    • 2. Tsunami

A cool little groove from this mysterious funky combo! “Yo Todo Tu Yo” has a slight Latin vibe – as you might expect from the title – but is also this hip midtempo funk number done with snapping drums and watery keyboards – kind shimmering next to the tight breaks, while horns slow vamp nicely, spurred on by some strumming funky guitar! Mighty nice stuff – a funky groove for a languid afternoon – and “Tsunami” moves at an equally mellow pace, with a wicked slow-walking groove!

Lalo GuerreroLos Chucos Suaves / TequilaJukebox Jam Series

One of the best tracks from Jazzman's Jukebox Mambo comp - Lalo Guererro's 'Los Chucos Suaves' is perhaps the definitive recording in the short-lived Los Angeles sub-genre of Pachuco music - the sounds which emanated from the Mexican youth sub-culture of the same name in the late 1940s. A hybrid of American Jazz, Pop and Latin American rhythms, with songs sung in Spanish and dense in chicano slang, the movement was an intriguing sub-plot in the emergent narrative of rock and roll in the mid-century.

Benjamin Love Is Gonna Let You Down Cherries

    Chicago boogie!

‘Love Is Gonna Let You Down’ sets plaintive vocals, keys & ripping guitar work at an addictive mid-tempo pace over reverb-heavy drum machine, all while exuding an inspiring & romantic melody. The slower Side B, ‘Not A Moment Too Soon’ features panned synth stabs & lush, layered keys, the quad bumping as Benjamin testifies to love’s onset. Two stand out efforts - entirely performed and produced by the artist - that are guaranteed to bang in the club, car or crib.

    Ruth Brown Mambo Baby Atlantic

Two absolute classics from Atlantic's first queen of R&B, the one and only Ruth Brown. 'Mambo Baby' rode the mambo craze like few other records could, hooking you right in from the shuffling bass and piano pattern of the opening bars. And when Miss Brown joins in with her typically self-assured, sassy and sexy squealed vocals, any resistance is truly futile - this is in the territory marked 'R&B perfection'. As indeed is '5-10-15' hours on the flip side, one of Brown's signature songs, and another of the finest recordings of the entire 1950s.

      Lord CreatorSuch Is LifeRandy's

Lord Creator was imprisoned for 18 months for possession of a small amount of cannabis (although the fact that he was a Trinidadian most likely had something to do with the excessive severity of the sentence). After release from prison, recording "Such is Life" at Randy's studio, which he had written while incarcerated.  The B side features Lord Creator singing about his time in prison with a lovers twist that makes an interesting contrast to Toots Hibbert's more defiant treatment of the same theme in "54-46, That's My Number", released the same year.
