Controversial British film maker Ken Russell directs this biopic of Russian composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, portrayed here by Richard Chamberlain. Although lauded as a composer, Tchaikovsky has continued to struggle with memories of his troubled childhood throughout his career. He marries wanton nymphomaniac Antonia Mikyukova (Glenda Jackson) but has homosexual urges, lusting after Count Anton Chiluvsky (Christopher Gable). The film is based on the book 'Beloved Friend' by Catherine Drinker Bowen and Barbara von Meck, adapted for the screen by Melvyn Bragg.
