"When working with old Jamaican tapes from Bunny Lee’s estate for the 'Prince Fatty Meets The Gorgon' album, I discovered a few mysterious unlabelled reels. One of these 4-track tapes turned out to be 'Earth Wind and Fire' by Paul Blackman, produced by the great Augustus Pablo. First released on Pablo's label, Rockers International, in Kingston in 1979, it's a firm roots and dub favourite for many, myself included.
"Hearing the original multi-track studio recording for the first time, I nearly fell off my chair! But to give the best sound today, the music needed a bit of love and restoration. And the original mix was only drums, bass and piano behind the vocal. I always wondered why they never added organ and guitar!
"A quick call to Addis Pablo at Rockers International for permission and here it is – a new cut, reimagined and remixed with guitar, organ and extra percussion. And a fresh dub on the B-side."
Restored and remixed at Prince Fatty Studios in Lewisham, UK, here is a Jamaican reggae and dub classic in vital new forms. Clearer, bassier, fuller, richer – it's ready for the sound system decks and your home hi-fi.
