Pressure Sounds dig deeper to uncover this long lost Black Ark rarity. Native was the brainchild of Wayne Jobson, cousin of Island Records co-founder (with, of course, Chris Blackwell) Dickie Jobson and Bob Marley’s lawyer Diane Jobson. Hailing from St Ann, close to Bob’s birthplace in Nine Miles, he jammed with The Wailers as a youth and was encouraged by them to begin a career in music. Also responsible for the deep roots track Mother Country as Little Madness which appeared on Pressure Sounds’ recent Tommy Cowan compilation Life Goes In Circles (an instrumental piano cut is included on this CD), he formed Native in 1977 and was carried to the Black Ark by bassist Boris Gardener in August of that year to impress Perry, who believed he was an Arawak Indian, with his songs. Not all the tracks here have the full Black Ark sound as some were recorded at Randys and Channel One, but titles such as Rock Stone, In A Strange Land, Late September In May (and version), In The Land Of Make Believe and Meet Mr Nobody (with version) present the legendary psychedelic Ark sound in all its glory, the rest including Black Tracks (with version) and Great God Over In Zion succeed on their own terms. A curio certainly, but anyone into the late Black Ark sound will require this.
