Those with an encyclopaedic knowledge of obscure old Chicago house tracks should be familiar with the work of Brett Kevin Wilcots aka Gallifre. He released a pair of suitably jacking EPs on Larry Heard's Gherkin Records imprint at the tail end of the 1980s. Way before that, though, he delivered the now impossible to find Chicago Boogie Rhythm Tracks EP (1987), which here gets reissued for the first time since. The title hints at what's inside: drum machine dominated workouts (see '117 (Beats)', the sparse and stripped-back 'Night Beats', and 'Faces (Beats)') and lo-fi, synth-splattered early explorations of the Windy City house template (most notably 'House Rhythm', long considered a formative Chicago classc). Throw in a handful of unreleased jams from the period and you have a genuinely essential reissue.
