Detroit's Jay Dee flipped the script in 2001 with Welcome 2 Detroit, launching BBE's Beat Generation run and marking his first solo statement after years reshaping hip-hop from the engine room. This 25th anniversary instrumental edition returns the LP to its skeleton, letting his MPC quirks and Detroit jazz leanings resound without interference. You hear the lineage stretching from his work with The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest through to the later Slum Village era, especially on pieces including 'Think Twice', the bruised shuffle of 'Pause' and the humid sway of 'Brazilian Groove', refreshing our read on his forensic timing and textures.
