Les Stances à Sophie is a tour-de-force Nouvelle Vague/ French New Wave film that has amazingly been lost to the world for nearly fifty years!

Driven by a narrative full of the post-1968 ideals of Paris radicalism, hip dialogue, sharp clothes and fast cars, the film features the infamous soundtrack by The Art Ensemble of Chicago, including ‘Theme de Yoyo’ featuring legendary soul singer Fontella Bass.

Céline is a free-spirited, sexually liberated woman who embarks upon a relationship with the bourgeois Philippe that is doomed from the start. Céline struggles to live within her newly found confines, before reasserting her freedom through writing (a text on ‘female sexuality’), art and love affairs.

A car crash starts and ends this prophetic film, which was made in Paris in 1970. An excellent cast led by Bernadette Lafont (as Céline) and Michel Duchaussoy (as Philippe) seamlessly weave the themes of sexuality, art, truth, love and music throughout the film.

With the stunning soundtrack by The Art Ensemble of Chicago (who also make an appearance in the film), a superb sophisticated narrative based on the powerful, feminist novel by Christiane Rochefort (who also co-wrote the script) and Moshe Mozrahi’s excellent direction – with all the energy of the youthful French New Wave movement – makes this film an instant essential addition to French cinema.

French/Israeli-based Moshe Mizrahi is the Oscar-winning director of over twenty feature films and has worked with everyone from Simone Signoret to Rita Tushingham, from Jean Rochefort to Tom Hanks.

Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) will introduce the film and Soul Jazz Records will be playing music in the bar before and after the screening.
