Tumba Francesa: Afro-Cuban Music From The RootsTumba Francesa la Caridad de CubaSoul Jazz Records

Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is a 140-year old institution in Cuba.

The music of Tumba Francesa is a unique combination of African drums and French patois vocals alive in Cuba today.

This is the first in a series of albums reflecting Afro-Cuban culture newly recorded by Soul Jazz Records in Cuba. The Tumba Francesa La Caridad de Oriente won Cuba’s National Award for Community Culture and, in 2003, the title of UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the first such award to be bestowed on Cuba. This music was recorded in EGREM studios, the state owned studio in Santiago, eastern Cuba.

Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is situated in the economically poor Los Hoyos district of the city, a vibrant epi-centre of Afro-Cuban culture. In the 19th century there were hundreds of Tumba Francesa throughout Cuba. Now only two remain; Tumba Francesa of Santiago de Oriente and nearby Tumba Francesa de Guantanamo.

Originally mutual aid societies for the ex-slaves who fled the neighbouring Haitian Revolution, Tumba Francesas would put on elaborate shows during carnival dressed in ballroom costumes of 18th century France playing purely African music. Tumba Francesa La Caridad de Oriente continue this tradition today. The music of Tumba Francesa la Caridad de Oriente is at once both modern and traditional, both an important aspect of contemporary Cuba and coming with a vast cultural legacy.

The CD / LP comes complete with extensive sleevenotes and spoken introduction by the Afro-Cuban poet and writer Pedro Perez-Sarduy and photography by the New York writer, musician and broadcaster Ned Sublette (author of Cuba and It's Music).

Rekid85 Space / RetroactiveSoul Jazz Records

Rekid is the alter-ego of Matt Edwards A/K/A Radio Slave, remixer to the stars and dance music’s man of the moment whose work with DJ Hell, Kylie Minogue (where he famously mixed Kylie with New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’), Carl Craig, Talking Heads, Gwen Stefani and even Elton John has made him currently one of the most in-demand remixers working today. Rekid is the pseudonym he uses for his more serious/underground work and "85 Space/Retrospective" are two more amazing slabs of tech/disco/slowed down house, his trademark sound as a taster for his forthcoming album ‘Made In Menorca" released later in the year on Soul Jazz Records. Last year saw the release of the debut Rekid release "Tranzit" on Soul Jazz Records (which sold out on the first day!). With numerous recording projects (Rekid, Radio Slave, Quiet Village, Mathew E, Sea Devils), Matt Edwards’ music breaks down the traditional barriers of dance music – house, broken beat, techno, electro, hip-hop, disco cut-ups – and influences from Walter Gibbons to Andy Weatherall to DJ Harvey to create a truly unique sound.

    SutekhTwo VireosSoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz's 'Microsolutions To Megaproblems' series continues with a new single from San Francisco's electronic pioneer, Sutekh. Manipulating and abusing computers, samplers, synthesizers, various acoustic instruments, and found sounds, he has created everything from deep, minimal house and techno to dense, dissonant noise collage. Sutekh?s single Two Vireos is his latest double-sider. ?Red Eye? is a sophisticated broken beat track with a vicid acid-bassline. An epic arrangement with a nod to the old Detroit masters. 'Black Capped', in contrast to the a-side ? returns back to the sounds of classic minimal techno, a la Underground Resistance. San Francisco-based Sutekh has released consistently inconsistent electronic music on labels such as Soul Jazz (where he features on the recent Microsolutions album)(UK), Leaf (UK), Force Inc./Mille Plateaux (Germany), Orthlorng Musork (USA), and his own Context.

New Thing!Deep Jazz in the USASoul Jazz Records

New Thing! tells the story of Deep Jazz in the USA. Post-Civil Rights, Post- Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, Post-John Coltrane, this album shows how radical musicians developed musically, politically and spiritually at this time.

New Thing! shows how these musicians redefined themselves and their music to present a new Black American music that encompassed Jazz with Eastern music and philosophies, space travel, classical music, ballet and African music alongside other American musics such as Gospel, Funk, Soul and Blues. The period of music covered on New Thing is from 1970-1985. (One exception and a forerunner to much of this music, the Sun Ra track "Angels and Demons at Play" is from 1957! and clearly shows a man ahead of his time in his music and ideas). New Thing! features heavyweight Jazz artists such as Alice Coltrane, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra and Archie Shepp alongside many other less-well known, but equally important artists such as Rashied Ali (who played alongside John Coltrane) and Stanley Cowell (who started one of the first independent labels for this music, Strata-East Records, along with Charles Tolliver).

The music on New Thing! ranges from the deep street funk of "Street Rap" and "Funky AECO" to hypnotic eastern-influenced tracks such as "Tibetan Serenity" and radical left-field tracks such as Rashied Ali and Frank Lowe’s "Duo Exchange". The album comes with extensive sleevenotes and exclusive photos (many by celebrated photographer Val Wilmer, herself an important chronicler of this period in music).
