Chicago SoulElectric Blues, Funk and Soul: The New Sound of Chicago in the 1960sSoul Jazz Records

New edition of this classic set of funk and soul from Chicago's legendary Chess Records. CD comes in new deluxe hardback card case edition and perfect bound booklet, 2xLP comes on heavyweight loud vinyl with with full accompanying sleevenotes.

Soul Jazz Records latest release features classic and rare electric blues, funk and psychedelic soul music recorded in Chicago in the 1960s.

Chess Records, the infamous soul, blues and jazz powerhouse record company in Chicago was, in the 1960s, one of the main rivals to Motown in neighbouring Detroit and Atlantic Records in New York in its relentless charting of black music in the US charts. Owned by Leonard and Phil Chess, two Polish immigrants, the label brought Chicago’s urban black music to the masses on a huge scale.

Later Leonard’s son Marshall took the label in new directions, first by courting rock artists such as the Rolling Stones to record at the studios and then in the late 60s releasing genre defying radical psychedelic and experimental rock and funk releases by blues legends Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and the progressive Rotary Connection, featuring a young vocalist Minnie Riperton, originally a secretary at the company.

After the closing of Chess in the 1970s, Marshall went on to launch Rolling Stones Records with the legendary group.

The label was recently the subject of two Hollywood films, ‘Who Do You Love’ and 'Cadillac Records', as well as both a BBC4 television documentary and a four-part BBC6 radio documentary celebrating the story of this amazing independent label that took on the mighty giants of soul music in the 1960s.

This hardback CD edition showcases a stunning selection of the radical funk, psychedelic soul, rock and jazz tracks recorded for Chess mostly under the production of the genius composer arranger Charles Stepney or Richard Evans and the direction of Marshall Chess. Stepney would later become partners with Maurice White producing seminal Earth, Wind and Fire albums in the 1970s. White was both founder of E,W and F and pert of the regular in-house players at Chess in the 1960s (as a drummer).

Other regulars included the crack team of Pete Cosey (who later played with Miles Davis), Louis Saterrsfield (another future E,W and F member) and Phil Upchurch. Chess's position on the south side of Chicago led to many musical connections with the jazz scene of the AACM, a link that continued even though the music released on the label was solidly dance-led throughout.

THe album comes with a 40 page booklet featuring extensive social, cultural and historical text and info and exclusive photographs showing how Chess Records launched urban blues in south-side Chicago, then brought it to the American masses and then in the 1960s recorded and released a stunning array of black styles, music that was both progressive and yet rich in the cities black urban musical legacy, as they created hits on an almost daily basis.

An England StoryThe Culture of the MC in the UK 1984-2008Soul Jazz Records

The development of Black music in the United Kingdom owes much to the influence of Jamaican and US music on each succesive generation of Carribean immigrants to the UK - from Windrush to the present day. UK based MC’s take these influences, mix them up with local references and styles thus creating an identity of Black British culture. This is constantly evolving not just musically but also in terms of each subsequent generation’s relationship to British society. As Tricky put it in Massive Attack's Blue Lines, of "English upbringing, background Caribbean” An England Story shows the links and musical path from the arrival of UK Dancehall and Soundsystems in the early 1980s, through successive musical movements such as Jungle, UK Hip-Hop, up to today’s Garage, Grime and Dubstep. The global pre-eminence of American hip hop means that music like grime and UK hip hop is often seen as a form of rap, whereas it owes as much to reggae music and culture as it does to any American influence. Black music in Britain has fashioned its own identity in contrast to that of America, Africa, or elsewhere, by drawing on the unique relationship that the UK has with the Caribbean. As Rodney P (of celebrated 80s UK Hip-Hop group London Posse) says: "This is a UK thing, it's hip hop and it's reggae and we do reggae - and those Americans don't know about that". Since the evolution of the 'fast chat' dancehall style of the early 80s, the influence of reggae music and culture has been crucial to the development of urban music in Britain: from the heavy sampling of Jamaican vocals/instrumentals employed by jungle, hardcore and garage, to grime's London take on the soundclash, the riddim version and patois-inflected rhymes. The importance of the Jamaican soundsystem concept and its dubplates, specials, clashes and heavy, heavy bass is a constant throughout these different stylistic mutations “An essential primer for your head, hips and feet.” The Wire “Two-disc CD celebrating the history of the MC. Crank this up!” DJ “Soul Jazz records’ excellent new compilation says more about cultural integration than any number of Mobo awards” The Guardian Read the full review Here “England Story is a vital reminder of the power of the voice. Jende Ri Palenge CD/DVD/LP Box SetPeople of Palenque - Afro ColombiaSoul Jazz Records

Soul Jazz Records presents this amazing 3 disc/5LP + dvd Box set Afro-Colombian music and film project made in Colombia.

Film-makers/music producers Santiago Posada and Simon Meija came to Palenque, near the Caribbean coast of Colombia,  to record the music of the area and to make a documentary film about the music and people of Palenque.

Palenque, the location of the first free slave (or Maroon) community in the Americas, is also a central location for Afro-Colombian culture. With its own unique style of music and language, heavily influenced by its African heritage, it holds a unique position in the world and is today proclaimed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The Colombian-born film-makers, who were fascinated by this culture, traveled to Palenque to build a studio in the remote town, west of Cartegena, in order to record the highly percussive roots music that uniquely mixes African and Latin traditions in equal flavours. They stayed in the town for three months, filming the everyday life and recording music from the area and once finished left the studio for the people of the area to use.

Once back home they enlisted a select number of like-minded electronic, house and dubstup artists to produce a mindblowing second disc of remixes - including some incredible music from Osunlade, Mattias Aguayo, Kromestar and others to interpret the original works.

This set includes the DVD, the CD of original music and the CD of remixes. It comes in a stunning three case box set with sleeve notes  about the project and the history of Palenque and exclusive photography.

There is also an extremely limited (1000 worldwide) incredible 5LP (comes with free DVD) box set available.

NB Digital Download is for music only.

Soul Jazz Records presents Brasil featuring Sivuca, Joyce, Raul de Souza and moreRecorded in Rio de Janeiro, BrazilSoul Jazz Records

Brand new edition of Soul Jazz Records’ Brasil album recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 1994 with a host of legendary Brazilian musicians including Sivuca, Raul de Souza and singer Joyce Moreno – which has remained one of the key defining early releases from the record label. Out-of-print for over 20 years (!!!) the album has now been fully digitally re-mastered for this new 2018 edition.

The album was recorded at the height of the first wave of interest in Brazilian music in London in the 1990s. Joyce and a group led by husband drummer Tutty Moreno had just been brought to the UK for the first time ever by Gilles Peterson and Brazilian music obsessive Joe Davis (and future head of Far Out Records) and performing to over 2,000 new young fans.

Singer-songwriter Joyce has been a living legend in her native Brazil ever since the Bossa Nova movement of the 1960s and had made her first record when she was just 20, and described by Antonio Carlos Jobim as ‘one of the greatest singers of all time.’

Joyce Moreno agreed to be involved in the project to record an album in Brazil produced with a UK sensibility and Tutty Moreno’s group signed up as the house-band for the project. Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records) and Joe Davis then flew to Rio de Janeiro, searching out studios and rehearsal spaces.

During this time in Brazil more artists signed up for the project including legendary figureheads of the Brazilian music Sivuca (who brought his own group) and trombonist Raul de Souza. Other key figures included singer/guitarist Celia Vaz who worked extensively as arranger with the legendary Quarteto Em Cy and drummer Dom Um Romao); Wanda Sá, who played in Sergio Mendes’ original seminal bossa nova group Brasil 65 (during which time she married the artist Edu Lobo); and legendary saxophone/flautist Teco Cardoso whose bio reads like a who’s who of Brazilian music and includes work with Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi, Baden Powell, Joao Donato, Carlos Lyra and others.

The final piece to this Brazilian jigsaw was the addition of percussionist Pirulito – whose stunning display of self-made instruments allowed him to magically create the massive sound of Rio’s Samba Schools live inside the studio. The album was recorded over one hot summer, mixed in London and then released at the end of 1994.

Over 20 years on and Soul Jazz records’ Brasil album manages to capture both an important cross-cultural musical moment in time between Brazil and London while at the same time sounding as fresh as if it was recorded today! Following the original success of this album Soul Jazz Records’ continued its love affair with Brazil and went on to release a host of Brazilian albums including classics such as Tropicalia, Brazil 70, Bossa Nova, a Bossa Nova cover art deluxe book with Gilles Peterson and releases by Sergio Mendes, Baden Powell, Edu Lobo and more

The Sexual Life Of The SavagesUnderground Post-Punk from Sao Paulo, BrasilSoul Jazz Records

"The Sexual Life of The Savages" traces the story of a set of Brazilian groups who took their inspiration from US groups such as ESG, Liquid Liquid, Arto Lindsay (himself a Brazilian) and DNA, James White and The Contortions as well as UK groups such as A Certain Ratio, The Pop Group, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Cabaret Voltaire and New Order. With groups like LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Chicks On Speed, Le Tigre, Liars, Radio 4 and other contemporary punk/dance bands taking their influences from this period, the music of these groups (all of whom have remained unknown outside of Brasil until now) will be a revelation. The title from the album relates to the complicated relationship Brazilian musicians have with the music of the US and their ironic perception of how Brazilian music is seen outside the country.

Add N To X - On The Wires Of Our Nerves (Special Limited Edition RSD 2021 silver vinyl)Soul Jazz Records

Super special 20th anniversary SILVER vinyl!

Incredibly inspired electronic retro-futurists who were so ahead of their time that they eventually imploded. This is a classic album!

In the space of five short years (and as many albums) at the end of the 20th century Add N To X caused havoc with their unique retro-futurist electronic music. Add N To X’s musical intensity proved too much for the group who split up in 2002. Their album On The Wires of Our Nerves, complete with its classic cover image, recorded on Soul Jazz Records’ then new offshoot label Satellite Records, launched them into the spotlight and included two NME Singles of the Week ‘Black Regent’ and ‘King Wasp’. Over twenty years since it was first released and long out of print the album 'On The Wires of Our Nerves’ stands up one of the most forward-looking electronic albums of then and now.

This classic album is released in a very limited one-off pressing transparent vinyl edition as an Record Store Day exclusive title

SandozLive In The EarthSoul Jazz Records

New album of electonic and digital dub and reggae from legendary post-punk pioneer Richard H. Kirk. Richard H. Kirk founded the group Cabaret Voltaire in Sheffield in 1973 alongside Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson. One of the earliest signings to Rough Trade records, the group created a unique industrial sound that perfectly fitted into the post-punk ethos of the late 1970s. The name of the group was taken from a meeting of Dadaist artists in Zurich, Switzerland in 1910. Cabaret Voltaire were at the centre of the burgeoning Sheffield music scene that also gave rise to The Human League, Clock DVA, Heaven 17, Pulp and now the Arctic Monkeys. In the 1980s, Cabaret Voltaire left their punk roots and moved into a post-industrial dance territory - even recording an album with Marshall Jefferson in Chicago - citing him as a similarly inclined maverick artist of the house community. As early as 1978, Richard H. Kirk had started his solo career with the album"Disposable Half Truths", releasing material under his own name as well as under a stream of pseudonyms such as Electronic Eye, Sweet Exorcist, Trafficante, Blacworld, Nitrogen and more. His work has contined to appear on Rough Trade, Mute, Warp and numerous small independent labels. Since 1992, Kirk has been using the name Sandoz and in 2002 released "Sandoz in Dub: Chant to Jah" on Soul Jazz Records, an album of electronics mixed with reggae and dub. "Live in This Earth" is the second chapter in Richard Kirk’s journey into the heart of Dub. Taking his influences from dub producers King Tubby, Lee Perry, Scientist and more, Kirk has mixed these sounds together with his trademark electronic experimentation to produce a remarkable album.

TetineI Go To The DoctorSoul Jazz Records

Killer Punk-Funk/New Wave 12” featuring the Sao Paulo based group Tetine along with a wicked remix from CSS. Tetine are Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado. This is their second release on Soul Jazz Records and is a taster for their forthcoming album Let Your X’s Be Y’s, a wild mix-up of Punk-Funk/New Wave/Post- Punk/Baile-Bass. Integral to the same vibrant Sao Paulo music scene in Brazil that has now produced both CSS and Bonde de Role, Tetine’s music is similarly a mixture of raw punky energy and attitude mixed with bass-heavy dance music. Tetine are in-fact the forerunners of this scene having now released 8 albums in Brazil since they formed in Sao Paulo in 1995. "Tetine was my first inspiration in terms of intellect, presence and their amazing performances. It was right there in front of me but it made such a strong impression I never forgot that was what real music is about: freedom and purity and, of course, in many different ways, FUN! I've never seen something like that coming from Brazil, or actually, anywhere!" Lovefoxx - CSS Constantly exploring the boundaries between music, art, video, performance their infamous live events range from rock gigs to gallery installations. "Tetine are Feminists, un-followers and inventors of their own scene; an uncut diamond. If Art is really dead, then Tetine belong to a "nameless" genre – the makers of something wild, something alive." Chicks On Speed Aside from their own music, Tetine have also been instrumental in bringing the Brazilian underground scene to the general public, having compiled both Funk Carioca (the first ever album of Baile Funk outside of Brazil) and Sexual Life of the Savages (an essential primer to early-80s Post-Punk from Sao Paulo, released on Soul Jazz Records).
