Evocative of the London of that era (1967), complete with the Carnaby Street sign on the sleeve. Tew is ably supported by Big Jim Sullivan and Alan Parker on guitars.
Winchester Cathedral opens the album - a well-played cover of The New Vaudeville Band's novelty hit of the previous year. A strummed-up Detroit City follows with a groovy Shuffling Sam proving its dancefloor mettle with a stirring break. A sparse version of These Boots Are Made For Walking (complete with cool cat vocals) concludes side one.
Second half highlights include a sprightly Spanish Flea complete with three false endings and a moody rendition of This Is My Song. A somewhat orchestral and drum heavy Penny Lane brings the LP to a dramatic conclusion.
Alan Tew went on to create more enjoyable records over the next decade - culminating in the classic The Hanged Man - but this early effort is definitely worth checking out.
