Island In The Sun (1957) Dir. by Darryl Zanuck

    20th Century Fox

Set in Barbados, this is the story of a fading colonialist society and a rising independent afro-caribbean world meet. Belafonte is a strident local union boss about to become a politician. James Mason plays the old-school colonialist who is about to fall from his place as the traditional structures are about to fall. American liberal Zannuck also used this setting to show miscegnation (which would not have been able to filmed if the setting was the US). Indeed the film was banned in many southern states for showing a black and white love affair - this was 1957 after all. Very good film about post-colonialism and American racial discrimination!
