This rare Argo set captures the contemporary scene perfectly, and features Shaw's trumpet on eight fantastic original tracks – deftly shifting between modernism and soul jazz, in a mode that's incredibly sophisticated for the time. Many tracks are written by Jim Taylor, the excellent young pianist in Shaw's group – and other players include Herb Wise on trombone, Jay Peters on tenor, Sid Robinson on bass, and Jerold Donavon on drums.
